For some time I have been collating data relating to Mini & Moke production in Australia, a project I started while trying to understand the jumbled information relating to Australian production available at that time. Some of that data has taken the form of a data base which has been used to confirm the actual existence of models produced as well as being the basis of calculations of the number of vehicles produced within each model range. Currently I have around 3000 vehicles and 700 build plates in the data base, information is being added on most days.

All going well I plan to publish the findings of my research next year, possibly through this forum. Information will include a list of all models produced, numbers of the models, a listing of all available production changes that occurred, a listing of the alpha numeric codes used within the various models along with some other relevant data I have gathered along the way.

Before going to press I would like to undertake one last check of the data to ensure that there are no errors within the data. This is where the Ausmini members can assist. I would like to hear from any members who wish to share their build plate details and have it included in the data base, photographic copies of the build plate are the ultimate evidence. A big thankyou to those who have already contributed data. The raw data contained within the data base will not be published thus ensuring confidentiality of individual information.

Look forward to hearing from Ausmini members. Contact can be either through this forum, email to j_p_sneddon@live.com.au or phone.

John,
Thanks for compiling this data & helping with mini identification of my cars. I have a few more Clubmans to add to your list when I can get back into my storage facility & write down the Chassis numbers.

Cheers Brad

Gday,
Happy to provide my details when I get out to my car this weekend. I just have a quick question.
I have a 64' Mk1 850, my engine no is a 8YUH prefix and my body prefix YMA2S1. From my research it seems that the engine number represents a Morris Minor Sedan however the body prefix represents an 850 Sedan.

Is this common or is there something that I am missing?
Thanks

YMA2S1 is definitely Morris 850

John,
I'm certainly very eager to learn more about the Australian built Minis. I've spent the last 40 years owning, driving and working on / with British built Minis and still have a small collection of Mk1s in the UK.. Now I'm here running the Classic Car Clinic on the Gold Coast, we see Australian (and a few UK) built Minis almost every day and am slowly learning the complex differences between the two. It goes without saying that I have an interest in learning more to enable me to give our clients the best service we can , but also to further my knowledge too.. I own a 1964 Australian built 'wind up window' 850 which I'll email details to you separately.

Mark.

YMA2S1 is correct for an 850 and that is the correct engine prefix for an early 850 with the English motor, the later ones have the Aussie motor , prefix 8A/U/M

Aussie minis didn't get wind up windows until the release of the Deluxe in 1965 . The only 850 to have windups was the Morris Mini Minor , produced from 1965-1967

@AJ,
I had a very early (1961) CKD 850, the engine prefix was 8AM/U/H.
Pretty sure the Oz built 850 motors were stamped 8Y/U/H. The Mini Car Clinic book agrees with me.

The more I look at identifying my YMA2S1 1966 Morris 850 the more I am inclined to believe it is an original windup window car. It has been registered all it's life and still has the original QLD black and white number plates. First of all there is no telltale on the car that shows that doors have ever been changed. The car has been in the same family all it's life and no one ever remembers it having sliding windows. Door trims are the correct type and match the rest of the trim. Although the car is now fitted with a 998 engine the engine number on the plate is 8YuH which was the engine prefix used in the YMA2S3 cars and they had wind up windows. I think BMC did put anything together with whatever parts they had available unless they produced car as special orders. I wonder how many Morris 850s were built with wind ups?

The attached pic may be of some help, our family bought quite a few new Minis back in the '60's and '70's
going through some of my mum's old stuff came across this insurance policy from 1963, she bought a brand new Morris 850 in July 1963, the engine number is on the policy, may be of some help.

The Morris 850 was a new vehicle added to an existing insurance policy, so the pic is of an attachment stuck to the policy of the previous car.
