Even the new competition baulk rings, don't seem to last long. Is the baulk ring metal too soft and wears quickly. Is the profile of the cut too aggressive , and so works well but wears out quickly? Is the gear coating causing the difference? Is 100 HP per litre of engine too much power to control? All theories welcomed. A vexing and disappointing issue.

Karcraft I think posted some manufacturing information a while back.

If I recall, up until about 1969 they were forged steel, the flycuts on the outside are caused by milling of the tapered lugs.
After this time they started using sintered powder metallurgy, and these were good at the time.
My thoughts...
With the demise of Rover production there is great variability in Quality of what we get now. I don't know if it's material, production method, poor machining or what.
Note that the 3 lugs are designed to be hard and the rest left much softer, perhaps this makes keeping them round a challenge.

You can do them on a surface grinding machine if you have one. I don't, I use the flat plate on my bench grinder belt sanding attachment. And use a micrometer to check they stay flat.
The lugs are too hard to file, or machine.

is there any mileage in adding extra crosscuts to the 6 cut ring?
