| Post subject: | Baulk rings |
Just going through some parts for my gearbox rebuild and I have 2 different types of baulk rings. One has more cutouts on the cone side than the other. Is one better then the other? Attachment: image.jpg

Hi Mini0998 The one on the right is a better one to use, and a better design,thats how BMC made the original one's with the little butter fly's on them if I use late model ones like the one on the right I use my little die grinder to cut more slots in them, the original ones had 12 slots in them,but once again it is cheaper to make them with less slots. The grooves there are like grooves on a tyre. They displace the oil in between so the baulk ring can grip the gear's cone, essential for gear speed matching (ie no gear grating during shift). |

Are these grooved the main reason for the preference for the old baulk rings over the new ones? Oncethe grooves are replicated in the new ones, do they operate more or less identically? |

Mick...I think its more about the quality of the metal faces...which I believe the Doc (for instance) tends to clean up the profile of originals if they are in good condition rather than use the new rubbish. |

The very best Baulk Rings are those with more cross cuts and the butterfly cuts on the outside, as Graham said. The next best is the ones with more cuts but does not have the butterfly cuts on the outside, then the ones with less cuts but a darker metal, I am yet to be convinced that any of the new baulk rings avail today are any good, my opinion only, |

If buying new baulk rings, take a gear with you, try the ring's fit on it. If they rock about in 1 plane (oval) or in both planes (wrong taper angle) don't buy them. By the time they are bedded in they will be worn out. I have 4 here I bought a while back, can't recall who from (probably in UK), they are so poor a fit I won't use them. However I have bought some from Karcraft and Minis Plus last year that worked well. On the road... not racing. |

I buy them from exactly the same supplier as the People you mention above, but I am afraid I do not have the confidence in them that You seem to Have Kev, As I said before though it is only My opinion. I do sell them to people that want New baulk rings, But only after I have advised them of my concerns, I have had New baulk rings in genuine Rover packs that failed in a very short period of time. so when that sort of thing happens it leaves me with some concerns |

You can extend life of good (not yet worn out) older baulk rings by surface grinding .020" off the face that goes toward the gear. However eventually you run out of good ones and have to buy new from somewhere. As I said in my post above, check the fit of what you are buying. Some are better than others. If they don't fit right, don't buy them. |
