Thank you for the reply. They are all hard to read. The 2/06 is visialble enough to make it out, if not preserved now im concerned that will be gone in time also. The other numbers are semi readable. I can make out 1 or two digits but the others are very hard to read. Really need to get on top of this before it’s too late so any info on that side of things would be great also.
What is the general consensus for leaving that part of the fire wall (stamped body numbers) in bare metal with clear coat so it is visible once restored? Not what I would normally do being it was not done by the factory that way but can not think of another option to make it visible once complete. Obviously this stamping is what defines it as a genuine MKII Cooper S. Without it, to me, it is just another replica.

You could just take a few photos of the 2/06 xxxx stamps to prove the firewall is a genuine MK2 S and show that to the next owner. Or post it up here and it will be in cyberspace forever.

The main thing you need for rego is the YG2S4 xxxx chassis number stampings. They need to be readable. You may need paint stripper to get all the crap out of them. and use a wire brush.

What have you tried so far? Any idea what car number you have?

Thanks winabbey, I really don’t want to leave it bare but I honestly think that even a single coat of paint would cover it, that is how fine the stampings are now.

Cheers gtogreen, unfortunately still haven’t found the numbers on the radiator shroud. Paint striped and tried rust remover but can’t see anything. Metal is pitted. She was sitting out in a paddock for years uncovered.

Oh and yes as soon as I could make out the body numbers I took a plethora of photos. I am not forum savvy but will try and post them in the future.

Bugger. Without an ADR plate it would be hard to get the chassis number from just the 2/06 number.

I wonder what the police use to get engine numbers to show up?

I had success with one engine using battery acid and wet and dry. Can't remember where I got the idea but it worked ok.

Oh sorry, so to clarify, I have the compliance plate and have located to body prefix number on the firewall (number stamping very light) just not the chassis prefix number on the radiator shroud. That may need some more work to identify but I’m not hopeful.

Couple of guys had success using Texta and steel wool for the engine numbers. Cant hurt to try. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=94100&p=1011211

Thats great. At least you know know exactly what numbers you are looking for. The placement and font size changed a few times. I can post up examples to help you pin point exactly where the stampings should be located.

They changed early 1970 from drop tray to fire wall on the MK2 is my understanding Ian.

Gto those pics would be super handy mate if not to much trouble. Why Texta btw?

My previous red Sept 1970 MK II S had it in the gutter above the wiper motor. Didn't check the firewall. Haven't checked my current Sept 1970 MK II S.

Not sure winabbey. From everything I’ve read they stopped the gutter stanmping early to mid 70. This is only going by my own research so don’t take it as gospel. There seems to be a lot or iregalities regarding numbers. I’ve heard they weren’t the best with protocols on stamping identification back then with wrong stamp numbers and many miss hits as can be seen in some photos over the years.

These show the difference in the 1969 stampings compared to the 1970 stampings. I am still trying to work out the exact changovers. Somewhere between 800 and 1100 they went to the second style. Then around 1400 they changed to the third style. Not sure about the texta. Maybe ask the other guys that used it.
