So there is a document that nominates 2372 as the change point?

The first six Cooper S's for NSW Police were on the road in June 1966. Service Liaison Summary (SLS) #132 below describes the Special Production Orders that applied to these cars. Interestingly it says the reversing lights were operated by a switch on the gearbox remote control, whereas SPO41 included the switch on the front of the gearbox. Maybe they were the same thing but just badly worded. Monaco - how are the reversing lights switched on the Mark 1 car you mention?

Doug,
While looking for a reversing light switch (p/n GAE131) to fit on the front of the gearbox replacing the detent plug, I came across Mini Spares UK parts list which also shows an exploded parts diagram for this part. Their diagram shows the reversing light switch fitting the remote housing on the RH side of the remote, opposite the large round rubber bung and next to the gearstick.
I have never seen the switch mounted in this location either - suspect it is a mistake and the cause of the comment in the SLS132.
Regards,
Bill

Doug have you found any markings on your head?

I haven't removed the head and it's covered in grease and dirt. After a quick clean just now I can't see a Lynx marking in an obvious place. It does have the 12G1805 factory stamp near the thermostat and a couple of indistinct markings on the flat areas at both ends. I'll have another look when it's removed and cleaned.

Of the later Mk2 'S' heads I have seen, it is not uncommon to see various letter stamps on the flats near the heater and thermostat including K, A, Z and S. I am not sure what these mean?

What do the letters as mentioned above ( K,A,Z and S ) mean?
MY Cooper S has the letter K stamped on the head in the mentioned area.

I'm also interested to know, mine has a Z stamped there.

While it's not going to answer some of these questions about fitting certain items, I have #2375.

Bill - yes, I have looked at that diagram. Does the remote extension have a threaded hole opposite the rubber bung to accommodate the switch? I can't get to my car at the moment to check.

Have you found a switch? I find it's easier to use the Lucas part number 34887. I know of a local source if you still need one.

Hello Doug,
1. The only item opposite the big rubber bung that I've ever seen is a threaded hole for the pin (2A3602) to locate the gearstick to the remote housing. Even if the switch was fitted here, I can't see how it would be activated. Still think it's a mistake.
2. Very interested on a lead to find GAE131. Just bought a new one from Leacy in UK. But its thread is 16mm x 2mm and not compatible with our gearbox hole (think it's 5/8 UNC x 11 tpi). Would greatly appreciate a source for the next "holy grail" item!
Regards,
Bill

I bought a 'GAE 131' switch locally and found that the plunger was too big diameter to fit inside the detent spring. So I bought a SH original from John Smidt. :)

That is a point - re size of plunger. I never got that far as the unit wouldn't fit in the hole at all.
Thanks to Doug and the Doc for the lead.

Starting to think that GAE131 is now a part number used for a different switch.

Coincidentally, today I came across this section of Parts News Newsletter dated May 1965 that introduces the reverse light function on Minis as an accessory.

Rumour was that the current one sold is a Jaguar part. Don't know, but in stock form it didn't fit.
