Post subject:  Which Alternator?

Did the Morris Cooper S leave the factory with a 15 or 17 AC alternator?
Did they have internal or external regulator?
Does anyone have a photo?

15AC. Used on Mk2 S, Mini K, and Mk2 MiniMatic etc.
They all had an external regulator on the driver's side inner guard.

17AC alternator (with internal regulator) was used on later Clubbies.

Mk1 S came with a Lucas C40? generator. Not sure of changeover date.

A MK II Cooper S with original Lucas 15AC alternator and 8TR regulator above the power brake booster.

Never seen a 14AC one, is this a typo?
I had 2 matics, a 69 and a 70, both were 15AC alternator and looked like your pic..
Number is visible on the end housing.

Yes, well spotted. I meant 15AC.

Also, I understand the 8TR regulator (flat brushed aluminium) wasn't particularly reliable. My Sept 1970 S has a 4TR (larger black plastic). May have been installed as a replacement by a PO.

Everything I've seen to date says all Australian Minis had a generator until the Mark 2 series (Mini K, MK II S, Matic) appeared in 1969 with the 15AC alternator fitted across the range.

Is it much of a job to ditch the external regulator and fit an alternator with an internal one? There seem to be a lot more replacement alternator options around that have internal regulators.

Was the 15AC alternator with internal regulator ever fitted to any mini? I have one that came in a box of parts I got with a car once and I've always wondered what mini its off?

It is dead easy, use a 15AC or 17AC, plug the brown/yellow wire into the alternator and leave the green one (field wire) off. You can unplug the external reg or leave it connected, makes no difference.

Clubman GT's had the all metal 15AC with internal regulator although the early ones (9F/XE/Y series?) had external regulators like Mk2S's but not sure exactly when they changed over.
Cheers

Below is a page from the Lucas Australia Alternator Manual, plus the engineering drawing for the 15AC alternator. You'll see the version with inbuilt regulator is called the 15ACR.

I understand there is a 15AC alternator with external regulator (all metal back), and the 15ACR with internal regulator (has black plastic cover on the back), but the one that I have looks exactly like the 15AC external regulated one (all metal back), but has an internal regulator.

All 15ACs I have seen without the plastic cover had internal regulator, and later style separate diodes not a diode stack.

I think you'll find it's the other way round. The 15AC has a black plastic half cover and requires an external 4TR or 8TR regulator (see photo below). The 15ACR has a flat metal back and no plastic cover.

Be aware that the alternators fitted to the Australian Mini range from 1969 were manufactured by Lucas Australia and have this marking clearly shown on the outside case. The UK had their own version of 15AC and 15ACR so don't get them confused.

There are several versions of the Australian 15AC alternator, identified by the Lucas eight digit part number embossed on the case. They all start with 629212xx but the last two digits will indicate the vehicle application. There is no internal difference between these 15AC's, just the front and rear alloy housing dimensions that will vary as they will be for different vehicle mounting brackets. For example, the part number on the 15AC in the picture is 62921215A, which the Lucas catalogue says is for a Datsun 1600. If I was fitting this to a Mini I would need to check the mounting dimensions to see if it needed alteration to the bracket.

The Lucas part number for an Australian Mini 15AC is 62921207, and for the later 15ACR-2D with inbuilt regulator is 62921219. If you are wanting originality they are the ones to look for.
