Hi, what is the best sound deadener to use for the interior roof , floor etc

I have resomat in mine but that was back when dynomat wasn't easily available and extremely expensive. Works well.

For deadening of rattles, road noise and to stop the tinny sound of bare panels you can use a product like Dynamat. It works by sticking to a panel and adding mass to it does not vibrate (the same way)/does not resonate.

For stopping transmission of noises through a panel (eg making a quiet sounding interior, or reducing noise from engine bay through firewall) you need some actual sound insulation (eg carpet underlay, foam, or a product like Dynapad. It works by stopping the transmission of noise through it like a true insulation.

I have Dynamat covering a percentage of most panels.
Then Dynapad on the firewall + carpet underlay on the floor for heat/sound/comfort.

Going to your specific question, for surfaces like floor and roof you would probably want both a Dynamat-type product to stop drumming and then an insulation product for squishy-ness, heat insulation, quieter interior..

What are the thoughts on the mini spares felt sound insulation at about $40?

And do people bother with the under bonnet insulation as well or is the interior stuff where the sound stopping power is of most benefit?

Pretty much both. Basically the more you put in the quieter it sounds. No idea about the felt stuff but Dynamat or Resomat type material has to be better as it's so much heavier than just basic felt. If you're in Sydney I have left over felt you can have, it looks useless to me in comparison to the proper stuff. It just looks like cotton wool that would disintegrate after a few years...

I put it on front firewall, rear firewall, floors, doors, behind the dash and under the bonnet. Can now talk in the car with 2" exhaust. The other big change that I made was to put in a straight through hotdog before the Lukey muffler. this got rid of a significant amount of noise. My car used to set of car alarms as I drove past. Now it's wife friendly if you drive civilly, but the still loud if you give it to her. Best of both worlds really. Definitely worth doing.

While the carpet was out, prepped and painted the interior with POR15 before laying the resomat as I was afraid that rust will start up between the matting and the floor. So far so good (10 years) but then I hardly get her wet.

Just read the description of the minispares stuff and it has "original very thick sound deadening". No idea what this means.

All I know is felt soaks up water, and water = rust.

I have a feeling it's the old fluffy stuff that sits about 1.5cm thick and true would soak up water.

The resomat looks like it comes in at min $175 which is a fair bit? Or is it streets ahead of the other stuff and so worth it I wonder

I agree Lillee, my old felt was just a rust production product because water got under it. I know you need to work out why water is getting in but if it does I want to be able to see it to sort it out. I am thinking of using some Velcro adhesive tabs to fix underlay to floor and walls rather than glue the whole thing down. That way I can get it out if water does get in. Not sure if it would work but I am going to try it.

The original underfelt wasn't glued down. It just sat there and was held in place by the weight of the carpet, which is positioned by the press-studs.

Another decision to be made based on the degree of originality you want.
