Hi, finally managed to wrestle the fuel tank out this afternoon, just a couple of questions, does the drain valve need to be there or could it be replaced with a plug? Would certainly make it easier to get the tank in and out. Also what's the best thing to clean the the tank inside with? It seems the tank may have Tectyl or some other preservative in it.

You can also cut it shorter so you can get a socket on.

Remove the drain from under the car before removing the tank.
Installation is the reverse.
I don't see why you couldn't fit a plug.

Well Done! You have avoided a great trap for young players.
Can be removed/replaced with a tube spanner to get over the extension spout.
I have replaced the original drain with a 3/8 UNF setscrew and thread tape or thread-seal to help future removal. By the time you ever need to drain the tank, that outlet has long since silted-or rusted up.
Tank can be cleaned with a phosphoric acid solution or sent to an engine reconditioned for chemical cleaning.

The drain fitting also helps positioning the tank better. Cutting it short to suit a deep socket makes it much easier to remove and fit.

I just used a piece of square section steel 1/2" OD and stuck that into a socket.

Ahhh ok, wish I'd known about the access from underneath the car, I actually got the vent out from inside with a set of vice grips. Our car has a towbar fitted and I couldn't see a damn thing from below. HaHa. Does anyone know what the thread of the vent actually is? Any chance it could be a BSP thread?

I have a right-size nut driver with a hollow shank long enough to accommodate the original length of the spigot. Only found out it could do the job when I'd run out of other options.

POR15 Marine Clean and if you have to treat rust POR15 metal ready.
I was really impressed by the distributors sectioned fuel tank (on display) which had the tank sealer applied as well. They're located in Warriwood NSW. Good Luck.
