| Post subject: | Mechanical fuel pump prob |
Hi all I've just replaced the mechanical fuel pump on the clubby but no fuel is flowing to my carby (via fuel filter). Do I need to prime it and if yes what is the best way to do this? Any advice greatly appreciated. Eiles |

Theres no need to prime them. Try a piece off hose on either side and put it very close to your ear, listen as someone winds it over. You should hear it working, sort of squeeking sound. Also was there spacers in kit/originally? What happened to original pump? |

Hi Peter The old pump started leaking pretty badly so I bought a new one (as they are non repairable), including correct spacer. Some other posts on this prob suggest filling the fuel tank right up to create a bit of head pressure. Eiles |

Have you compared the exact dimensions of the new pump and spacer versus the old by holding them side by side? If the new one is not pumping or making a sound like mentioned above the arm may not be making contact with the cam lobe. |

When fitting the pump to the block, before you have started to screw the bolts in, it is possible and easy to slip the pump lever arm down and behind the cam lobe rather than in front of the cam lobe. With the pump in your hand, it should tilt downwards before you try to fit retaining bolts. As you fit and tighten the retaining bolts there should be strong spring tension against the pump as you fit it. |

I did measure new against the old and everything seemed on par. The new pump arm has a plastic tip on it (the old one didn't) but other than that everything seems the same. I will have a go at filling up the pump with some fuel and see if it will pump it through to the fuel filter at least. If still no go I'll remove the pump and double check everything again and then refit as suggested above. Thanks for your help guys. I'll post results in the next couple of days. Eiles. |

I wouldn't open a new pump...its probably OK...but aren't there two types? I think it was the Goss type that used an "isolator" (spacer)... |

There were 2 spacers, a thick on some and a thin on others. Dunno which is which, as I now run electric pumps. |

After a lot of advice and hands on help from Perth Mini Community the fuel pump is finally working  Ended up removing pump again, measuring everything twice, putting it back in as per Bill B instructions, replaced the fuel filter, cleaned out fuel hose, then suctioned some fuel through the pump.
