I bought 4 hydro displacers from Jenks they look fine .Is there any way to clean inside the displacers. The displacers are 21A1477 I am fitting them to my 1970 cooper S. I have made new bundy tube for the hydro lines it would be good to have all the system clean. Making the tube is not an easy job I used 5 lengths to make 2 correct hydro lines. P7676

There's a great thread somewhere about cleaning them for storage, basically make a frame so you can pressurise them on the bench, then pump & release over and over till no more crap comes out

I flushed mine out with metho. Took a few fills to get 'em clean. Probably only necessary if the old fluid has been contaminated with rust.

21A1477 is embossed into the rubber on the top of every displacer ever made - probably the mould used originally.
The actual displacer identification number is normally stamped into the side of the metal body. Colours were also used for quick identification.
1970 Ss had 21A2012 front (1 silver band on flex hose and body) and 21A2014 rear (2 silver bands on hose and a silver band on body). These were the stiffest rated displacers for Ss. These tend to be hard to find today.
Late DeLuxe, all Ks and early Leylands used 21A2008 front and rear (with green band colour) which gave a softer/comfortable ride. The ride can be stiffened/improved by using competition bump stops and standard shock-absorbers added to the front suspension.
Regarding cleaning: I have tried to flush them but not very successfully - just fit them and pump up the suspension. Hydro fluid is an excellent rust prevention. Pump up the suspension and drain it quickly a few times. to flush out the gunk.
Concur about bending bundy tubing!

In my experience all hydro fluids are not created equal. I have seen fluid that looks like, and has the viscosity of, lime cordial.

I now use the Nulon concentrated cooling system stuff.

Anyone ever used a "flooood" to flush each side of the system? Metho? bulk Carby Cleaner! Kero? (might leave a residue)

I would keep kero well away from the internals of rubber hydro displacers...

Bit off topic but is there much of a difference in stiffness between a Cooper 21A2008 hydro unit
and a Mk2 Cooper S 21A2012 hydro unit??

I did read that and should have said it differently. I was more referring to is it very noticeable in ride/feel and handling between the two when in use?

If i need to replace one of my cooper S units (21A2012) for a standard unit (21A2008) due to Cooper S units being hard to find.

when my front bag blew and i had to replace it, i built a vacuum system and pump
Refilled the system
Went for a drive
returned home and let the fluid out or more like mud
I did this procedure several times until the fluid looked clean coming out
Might even do it again soon to see how its all looks
And i replaced my fronts with Mini K bags and added shocks and the car feels great

I have S/GT bags in front of my 1970 car and stock bags in back. Lillee has stock bags all round in his K. Both cars ride and handle the same with front shocks and comp rear bumpstops. Both when running A008s.
(Edit) If you have 2 of each I would put S ones in front. Car sits more level.
