Getting back to the original question cleaning out some hydro bags. I was able to use an old hydro fitting and attached the hose end of the bag to it.  I then used some brass fittings to the fitting so I could seal it off.   Pressurised the bag several times with a mixture of Nulon coolant and metho draining by removing the tapered brass plug.

My go to for these is to mix up some CT 18 truck wash and fill and leave them to soak up to a week. When you flush them out by using a single fitting (as per minimate) you will be amazed at the crud that is released. |

Doesn't quite answer the question on the difference in ride characteristics with the various displacers but the following tables from the BMC engineering drawing for the Australian manufactured displacers details the damping values for the standard Mini (YDO5) that had the same displacers front and rear, and the Cooper S (YDO6) that had different displacers front and back. When I bought a 20 litre tin, the owner said his father worked for HC Sleigh (Golden Fleece) who had the contract to make it for BMC in Australia and that their fluid was a close as possible to the original formula. But the new version does not have the same strong smell the original had. I recycle the old fluid by standing it in a clean soft drink bottle for a week to let the crud settle then pour off the clean fluid. |

I have been using Nulon concentrate with distilled water and a small amount of metho in the car, and used the same fluid to flush the spare bags, a recipe I read elsewhere previously. cheers |

I have cleaned out the displacers after 6 rinses they are clean, you can twist the displacers which moves the metho around the inside well. Now with my new hydro pipes I hope everything is OK. Thanks for all the constructive comments. P7676 |

Made some mods to my hydro pump today. Added a non-return valve at the pump outlet and a new tee and ball valve. I can now pump the car up and release through the clear hose to a separate container if the fluid is contaminated or back to the pump reservoir if clean. The non-return valve now maintains pressure in the system without having to juggle shut-off valves. I tested it on my spare hydro bag and it seemed to work well. I might look at adding vacuum if I can get hold of a cheap refrigeration pump. |

Cruiser I like the look of the bracket you have to pressurise the bag in. I was thinking of doing something similar. Do you have the piston insitu on the bottom of the bag or not ? Would it matter if there was no piston on the bag ? Are those plates metal or would timber be sufficient to take the pressure ? cheers |

I use the corner of a rusted out rear subframe to hold it when pressurizing the bag. Has some square tube welded across it. You do need the piston in, with or without the knuckle ball. I use steel for packing.
