Its amazing how a standard looking car with excellent stampings and a very readable ADR plate cant be registered but hundreds of fake Cooper S's can.

Where did you take it, Regency Park or Lonsdale?

And SA never recorded chassis numbers before about the mid-80's, only engine numbers.

GTO-the inspector basically stated that he's wasn't going to pass it until he was convinced that it hadn't been rebirthed or stolen.
He also obviously thought that it was a Cooper S as he mentioned that "these are now worth a lot of money" (which may be why he was overly suspicious of the car).
It does have a 1970 Mini K engine that is stamped as such but it's not the original one (which the car was probably registered under in the first place).
I suspect that it is a NSW car but god knows how I'll find any past rego details if it was registered under the original engine number.

Well up here in NSW at least, you don't need a paper trail of rego to put a car onto club plates.
Are you suggesting we should still have this, after most states dumped previous records when they went to electronic databases?

Yeah...I know that, but a lot of clubs want to see proof of previous registration and roadworthiness...

Yes...I am suggesting that "dumping" should not happen, but archiving (under the Archives Act) previous records should be mandatory for a whole bunch of reasons...a search fee for finding the data or placing it in an accessible suppository (!) for the great unwashed to search would be the go.

Yeah-but, its a long shot if Ron actually saw it and not just the local garage...the car could have come from anywhere...even locally there is "Casina" to Evans Head etc the local papers may be searchable but really, try and find any record of work/invoice...have you looked under the carpets etc

Garages local to Tabulam...

Doesn't matter - it is the same inspectors rotated through both sites.

Why should it be up to you to supply the information? What would happen if you bought a brand new unregistered car as an investment, kept it in your garage for 20 years, then wanted to register it?
Probably back when it was first registered they put a wrong didget in, it will never come up in any search.

There is something wrong with the registration records of both of my Minis. I inherited the error of one when I bought the car years ago, and the other was created when the know-it-all authorised inspector just wrote down what he thought was the chassis number and the engine number. As it'll cost me money to correct both, I won't.

The local person who swapped my car to historic plates put the engine number in as the chassis number. I expect it'll be too much effort to swap it back!

No, just get the club registrar to have it changed, or perhaps go to RMS and fill in a change of records form.

Definitely no paperwork under carpets or hidden anywhere as I stripped the car down to a shell, resprayed it and then rebuilt it.
10K later and here it sits

It will be a shame if i have to use it for parts as i also spent a year working on it to get it to this stage!

You might have to bring it interstate where a more common-sense approach could be found. I got through the process by using a statutory declaration saying that it had been in my possession for umpteen years.
Problem solved.

Or change a 1 to a 4 and stick some S badges on it.

Yes GTO-the old 1 to 4 switch seems to have been (and maybe still is) a common practise.
I'd be happy to just keep it as a nice (relatively) correct Mini K and not deceive anyone.
