Hey all,

I just wanted to check whether you think 100 degrees C is within the expected range of operating temps that you would typically expect from a freshly built motor?

There are a few things I am tweaking on the cooling system anyway – cooling system efficiency is a topic for another discussion. But taking that factor out and assuming cooling system is working normally…it has done about 250 kms since the rebuild. It’s supercharged. It sits around this level in the pic below, which I measured with a thermometer with the sender out of the car and it is pretty much exactly 100 degrees C. This was fairly sedate driving around in max 20 degree C weather. Doing mainly low speed driving, 40kph (doing the traditional laps around Newcastle beaches) several times through the day.

Would you expect that this would get lower over time as the engine runs in?

Supercharged or not that is too hot. Put the thermostat in hot water on the stove and check what temp it is fully open at. And I would use a 74C or an 82C one.

Great thanks for the info Dr Mini. The thermostat is fully open while it sits at the constant 100 degrees. I think I had an 82 in there, but I'd have to check. I can put a cooler thermostat in there, but I'm thinking it wouldn't really change the fact that it is sitting at 100 degrees as either way they're both going to be wide open - do you think?

There are other cooling system upgrades I'm looking at too, so there is further opportunity for improvement (I'm adding aux rad for extra cooling and a little extra water volume, and improving the thermo fan location/reinstalling a mechanical fan; depending on where it sits after that, I'm considering other options including replacing water pump and/or changing to electric water pump with electronic controller for pump and fan). If there are any other recommended things to look at, feel free to recommend - at the moment I'm operating under the assumption that the aluminium radiator is working well.

My money is on this too (and my hope is one this too :) ) I only got rid of the mechanical fan completely when I .. accidentally ... ripped the blades off it (the engine and radiator moved independently when I gave it a rev just after I installed the engine as I hadn't secured the rad bracket well enough - live and learn).

IME a thermo fan only is not enough to cool an A series with a side mounted radiator, even on a standard motor. It'll cook in slow moving traffic or on a hot summer's day. Front mounted radiator like the MPi models had is a different matter.

I am using a 6 blade tropical fan on my new engine , done about 100 kms , 74 thermostat , and it is running about 75-80c .

No problem the only time I have noticed it is between gear changes.

Is your timing set correctly, mixtures etc. This will cause an engine to run hot if they are incorrectly set up.

also take the grill off and see if your temp drops.

cheap things to try.

Engine is recently dyno tuned and running well. I've got a few things I'm doing - aux radiator, adding mechanical fan etc. Inc possible changes to mounting of the thermo fan too. So I'll see what the new baseline is after some changes.
