Post subject:  Curved H4 Headlights?

Hi All,

I've got a set of Cibie H4 headlights that came with my car. While the front of the lense itself is curved, the curved part of the glass is offset from the chrome retaining trim. It looks a bit strange and doesn't suit the car.

I'm after a recommendation for headlights:
H4 bulbs
Spot for parking/pilot light
Nice curved lense with flush chrome trim.

Current lights:

I'd like some that look similar to these:

Any ideas or help appreciated!

Halogen sealed beams look like the original style, are cheap and maybe worth a try. I haven't had personal experience though.

Any idea where to get these numbered ignition leads?

Wipac Quadoptic H4s. Available from minikingdomonline, Minisport in Adelaide, or bring in from minispares uk.
They are curved and look similar to sealed beams.
Much better performance. (Edit) than Hella H4.
They also include parking lamp fittings.

Part number (pair) is S4698B.

I am using Valeo Cibie iode semi-sealed H4 (p/n 082439 w/ park light). They have the same appearance as the lucas sealed beam and don't look like the cibies in your photo with the fluted edge.
With Osram globes they have a very useful spread of light on dip and a long pencil beam on high and far better than the Hella version which I have on the green mini.
But they are expensive at about 36 pound sterling each.
I would be interested to see the light pattern from the Wipac lights as an alternative.

Thanks all. If I can't decide before Rylstone I'll scope out what looks good there!

I fitted these lights to my car - Wipac Quadoptic H4s.

We have them at Minis Plus. They take H4 globes and are the same shape as the originals. Available with or without the parking lamp.

If you want the ones with parking lamp just ask, they are the same price.

It's a good idea to fit a headlamp relay, this ensures more V gets to the new lamps, and there is minimal current put through both the headlamp switch and dip switch. Instead of the 10A+ these switches cop normally.
I like the New Era one, it is made in Japan, has 2 integral 30A blade fuses and looks neat when installed.
Can be cut in neatly wherever the blue/white and blue/red headlamp wires run to front. Mine is up on the firewall above the heater ducting.

Yes, I have a New Era relay to be installed at the same time.

Hi, another way to skin the cat, especially for a nice stock looking 850 like yours, is try Anthony Pearson of Classic and Vintage Bulbs. Quite some years ago he fixed me up with a pair of genuine NOS Lucas 700 lamps with the thistle motif in the glass, and matching halogen inserts (60/55 from memory. They look totally stock. I actually haven't got the car running yet so can't comment on the quality of the light output, but they will be much better than old rusty Lucas 700.

If you are after the best modern halogens, something like Cibie or Marchal (Valeo) if you can find them with curved glass will be the way to go. Will be interested to read what you come up with.

Honda city lights are h4 with interchangeable bulbs are exactly the same as a mini lense. All you need to do is unscrew the fitting ring. Cheap if I recall too

Ok, a bit of a delayed update here..

I ordered some Wipac Quadoptics from a local supplier with a new set of rubber headlight bowl gaskets. The headlights weren't in stock, and when some came into stock they were a different brand and very flat on the front and looked all wrong. I also found out that some cars have 3 screw adjusting headlights and the later cars have 2 screw adjusters. I tried a couple of places, but they don't seem to stock the 3 screw gaskets here. They were sent back and I put in an order with a different shop.

I got the Wipacs and some 3H1031 gaskets in the post today.

It's all in the details :)

Do these have the pesky park lamp provision? Mind if I ask where you sourced them?
