Has anyone used this stuff?

http://search.supercheapauto.com.au/sup ... -Heat-Wrap

Obviously there are advantages in summer, assuming it does as claimed. Also seems there's many other variants on e-bay, some much cheaper, but I guess you get what you pay for.

I was wondering if there'd be any disadvantages in winter, thinking mainly about SU's icing up. Wife's car has Perry extractors fitted to a stock standard Mk 1 Cooper S. The engine is ready to go back in shortly, so obviously now is the time to make a decision.

All suggestions/ridicule/derogatory comments most welcome

I did a bit of research on this and the main issue i believe is that the exhaust underneath will rust out faster because moisture gets trapped between the wrapping and the metal. I used it once but sold the car 12months after fitting so i cant confirm this theory.

Good point GTO. I have already painted the extractors with heat resistant paint, although such coatings are not infallible. Even the ceramic gloss black factory coatings on my Jag Mk2 manifolds have deteriorated and have rusted.

Not only will the pipes tend to rust but they will be super heated due to lack of external cooling.
SU carbs in cold climates had an electric heater I believe.
Re the carb icing I fixed my Dellorto by welding an alloy pipe across the manifold. Fed from heater circuit. Not iced up since.

If you have stainless pipe it won't rust. I thought it was something to to with heat extraction in pipe, or some scientific jumbo jumbo.
The ceramic coating on the Jag manifolds will last if its done right and not damaged..

Jeez .. you'd think the factory would have done a better job so they'd last longer than 50 odd years :)

Jet Hot??? It comes in a range of colours... Or plain VHT ...apart from chips the stuff on mine has pretty much outlasted the actual headers.

Cheers, Ian

Thanks for all the replies.
I've decided to use the wrap sold by Euro-Tech ($40 for a 15 metre roll)
Yep, I've made a decision, I am so proud of myself.
I figure the extractors will outlast me, so it will become the next Cooper S custodian's problem!

Maybe a bit late however I can tell you from experience its a great product solution. I wrapped my pipes and the drop in temp was huge also a slight dampening in the orchestral buzz. Make sure you start from the bottom and move the wrap up toward the head end, it stops junk getting caught in the wrap and looks pro. I used those stainless cable ties you can get at bunnies every 200mm.
I first did it in 2011 and had a small fuel leak at one stage, the wrap disintegrated/burnt but the ties held the rest together. The Black colour wrap I used faded to a grey so I was happy to accept the temp change.

If you have extra, bundle it at the top like I did, just dont expect to be able to access the studs and nuts to reattach, until you remove that extra and get covered it its horrid fibers.

Thanks Besser. Not too late as I am progressing with the world's slowest engine rebuild! Good tip re starting at the bottom.
