Great info Doug. Looks like my car has a Cooper Dynamo 22704A. I think i might go down a pulley size so i can get better charging in traffic and at idle.

I think you've misread the parts book. Dynamo 22704 is the one for all Minis except Cooper and Cooper S, which are 22742.

Yes. I looked across and saw cooper on top of cooper s. Still doesnt help me with a 3.88" pulley but.

Just checked my late 68 build MK1 with original generator.
The pulley is 3 1/2 " diam. It has a cast centre with the actual pulley groove part made of 2 pressed steel pieces and then all riveted together.
The output terminal points down at about 30 deg.
I have vague recollections of the large diameter pulley being a marketing plus for the S.
I can't see the C40 part number etc to see if it's actually a UK built C40.
Doug's diagrams are for full cast pulleys and are not applicable to MK1 C40 gens used on the Cooper S.
AYH0061 is only 3.31" dia and AYA9029 is only 2.91" dia.
Possibly used on non S C40 gens such as Mini Deluxe etc.

Hope this helps
RonR

I pulled out an old generator I had stored away and it seems to have the larger pulley as used by the Cooper S. :D

I was online shopping for a replacement fan belt and noted one Mini site stocked a longer fan belt "to suit Cooper S with the larger water pump pulley."

Is that a typo, ...do they mean the generator or was the water pump pulley larger too??

3.6in so fraction over 3 1/2". Would be 3 1/2" if you measured where the belt sits i suppose.

Thanks Phill. No idea how it got a 3.88" pulley. Maybe it was from all the ex bathurst racing / ex police work. :D

I can't think of any other possible explanation. [GRINNING FACE WITH SMILING EYES]

This pulley was on a 63 dated English generator so...??

I also noticed something interesting about the generator was originally on the car, the mounts either end are mirror to the normal setup, i.e. different mounting angle and terminal different spot.

Both are aus made 64. Off a different model car I suppose. Still fitted ok.
