Thanks ausdino :)
There are some items I'm unsure of in the photo so makes it interesting and research needed.
Would you be able to post a photo of the firewall sound proofing for a closer look. Would just like to check some detail. Cheers

Any others you need, just ask. I'll pack them away again in a week or so.

You may have considered this already. when i got my MkII S, there were four pieces of underlay in the boot, cushioning the fuel tanks - a strip under each tank and a patch about half the size of a cigarette pack on each of the mounting points for the tank straps where they joined the back of the seat. NB - those tank mounting straps also had a thin layer of cork on the inside. Cheers, P

Correct :) and Thank you. I managed to complete those when I refitted the fuel tanks.

I don't know the originality of this. It came with the car and hasn't been unpacked for 33years......

Thank you ausdino
It looks to be original to me and I'm not sure but there appears to be a change at some point with the grain in the vinyl around 1969/1970.
What is left of my original item is the fine grain vinyl.
Thank you for all your time and help.
Cheers

My S has had this aluminium bituminous material adhered to the body under carpet during it's last restoration. It is only around 3-4 years old and it's still possible to remove it with some patience. I've finished removing the terrible stuff behind the dash (once the aluminium tears, it's extremely sharp). I didn't notice till I'd finished a section, my hands were cut to bits.. Next I'll be removing it from the floor and firewall.

My question(s) are;
1. What I should be putting back there to be more correct. knowing I don't have the original material.
2. Did Mini's have anything on the floor between the insulation and the metal.
3. Was the insulation fixed to the metal work with a type of contact adhesive?
4. Was the carpet glued to the insulation?

Cheers
Mat

Mat,

The original underlay in my Mk2 Cooper 'S' was loose fitting under the carpet with no adhesive.

The underlay on the inner firewall on my '69 Mk2 was glued and even some between the pedal box and bulkhead.

Since it's out of sight you could use any of the current felt type underlay. The original stuff had some nasty ingredients apparently, although I've never tasted it.

2. Did Mini's have anything on the floor between the insulation and the metal.
No. The insulation sat on the painted floor surface with the carpet on top. The whole lot was held in place by the press-studs in the carpet.

3. Was the insulation fixed to the metal work with a type of contact adhesive?
No, as above.

4. Was the carpet glued to the insulation?
No, except as below.

As mentioned earlier by Stibbsy, on the inner firewall (behind the pedals and heater) that piece of carpet is glued to the underlay which is then glued to the firewall. There is no underlay on the inner guards - the carpet is simply glued to the painted metal.

That's interesting, I thought mine had been butchered because of the little triangle cut out, I guess not. Thing is, I can't work out what the cut-outs are actually meant to be accomodating?

A couple of those pictures show the insulation upside down. The triangular cutout is for the wiper motor and the rectangular one for the master cylinders.
