I have had a recent tuneup on my 1969 CooperS with a new mechanic. They said the filter in it had disintegrated (it was in storage for 15 months) but nothing was mentioned at the pre-storage service. So a new K&N filter was installed & now there are some issues. With the filter in it runs like crap with the filter out it runs perfectly. It does have a larger cam than usual, is fitted with police special brake booster but with standard carbies. They say its imperative to have the air filter & as the car is not used for racing (hmmm their words) have encouraged me to retain the air filter & reduce the jet size to get the correct air fuel ratio. This of course will reduce the power. I like the way my car performs now & have had no previous problems. Any suggestions from this expert panel would be appreciated

Try another mechanic.
Have you tried it with the standard filters instead of the K&N? I have seen cleanable filters over dosed with filter oil and causing restrictions.
Don't discount other things causing problem, poor spark, dud condensors, manifold leaks etc.

What kind of filter did you fit after all? No air filter should alter the way the car operates, unless it is blocked (too much air filter oil?) or if it alters the carb configuration (Has the backing plate blocked the piston balance port on the front face of the carb?)

it really shouldn't run at all with 15 month old fuel, but still worth asking

Thanks for the responses. The filter was recommended to mechanic by minisport it is listed as K&N MPI Spi. The report states "on tune up engine found to be sucking in dirt through damaged air filter. Hunted round for replacement racing filter, reworked filter to fit twin SUV application. Clean debris from car by & leak down test. Small amount of leak down Number 1 indicating inlet valve seat issue.Check & adjust dwell angle, check condenser in coil. Change spark plugs very sooted, dhnage heat range to play with fuel mixtures. car running well" These plugs had only done about 200k
Oh no Simon, When the car was being undriven it had little fuel in it so it is new ⛽️ fuel

Are you using the standard Cooper S airbox ?

I'm guessing they sold you one of these, which is for the fuel injected cars and wasn't designed to fit a standard 1969 airbox...

I've pulled out my great paint skills for this! The stock arrangement has the intake (red) then the filters (orange) on the way to the carbs (green). This also means the filters are actually filtering the air.

If they managed to cram an oval filter in there it might be covering the intake pipe, and possibly not filtering the air at all!

Well done Timmy great pictures. I have contacted minisport & you guessed it! It is the oval filter for the injected motors. They are sending replacement today & still recommend the K&N over the Rover

Just to clarify Mini Sport sent the filter but it was ordered on line by my mechanic. Wrong choice. Once again thanks for everyone's advice, it is greatly appreciated. I will let you know the outcome for 69Cool

Hi, I purchased the K & N air cleaner as per Timmy’s post however, it is too high. Making it fit would damage the filter. I therefore, assume the Rover filter would be the best for my car. Any advice is appreciated

I am running the E-9001 K&N Airfilters on my MK1S and they fit fine.

Here are a few comparison photos of the original airfilter Vs the E-9001.

I can see how much better it fits. Minisport have Sent me the same one you have the E9001. They have asked me to send some photos of the box to see what it is like & offer an alternative
