Hi Doc,

I have locktite 263, 262 seems hard to get hold of...
How much of the stuff do you apply to the bolt?

Just for the record the crankshaft thread is a special 5/8" 16 TPI Whitworth BSW 55 deg included angle thread form.
The standard 5/8" Whitworth BSW thread is 11TPI.

It is not a 5/8" UNS 16 TPI thread. This thread is one of a series of Unified threads that have constant TPIs irrespective of the thread diameter.
TPIs usually decrease as thread diameter increases.

All unified threads use a 60 deg included angle form and you do not mix 55 deg and 60 deg thread forms if you wan't it to stay tightened.
BSW threads have rounded thread peaks and troughs whereas unified threads have truncated/flat peaks and troughs.
IIRC the thread max and min diameters are also different for BSW and Unified threads of the same diameter.
Unified threads became more common in Britain during and after WW2.
One of the first lessons learned by an apprentice fitter was that you do not mix BSW and Unified threads even if the TPIs are the same.

Hope this helps
RonR
