 Post subject: Correct MC's for an 850

Hi everyone, my 62/63 morris 850 is in need of some maintainace in the form of leaking master cylinders. It currently has what I think are Leyland MC's in it and I'd like to replace them with the correct "orgional" versions.
Can they be brought new?
What are second hand units worth? (both Ready to install? and In need of rebuilds?)

They would be the metal tin can style. Do you still have the original configuration single cylinder front brakes?

No it has 'S' disc brakes, un boosted.

You'll need to get the correct master to go with the brakes you have now. This master is for a Cooper S and you'll need to make sure you have the right sized rear cylinders (you don't want the rear brakes locking up first)

Original 850 with the single leading shoe front drums came with a 0.75" tin can master cylinder. They didn't stop real well...!
Unless you are a stickler for originality I would fit a 0.70" one for less pedal pressure needed. This size is also compatible with twin leading shoe drums, or even Cooper S discs. But if you have discs the S MC holds more fluid.
Clutch MC should be a 0.75" tin tank one.

The car is still on the road and I swaped the rear cylinders when I fitted the 7.5" discs.
From what Doc said I should get a tin 0.70" brake master, and a tin 0.75" clutch master.
I'm not going for 100% factory spec car, I just want it to "look" more standard than the mix match of parts it is now.

As you have discs I would add one of the clear nylon extensions to the brake MC so that the can stays full and you can see the fluid level as the pads wear.

Just one thing... you don't need the taller (more expensive ;) "S" master cylinder. These were developed to accommodate Flying Finns and lots of left foot braking that would take out a set of pads in one special stage.

With normal driving there will be plenty of fluid in the standard cylinder ..even after a year of road use...

Just get one with the correct bore.... to match your S callipers.... (which won't be right for an 850 of course).

Ok Doc and 1071, one says tin mc with nylon extension the other is saying a non 'S' mc.
I know of the long nylon extension that Doc is talking about but is there a 'S' mc and a plain old mc both with 0.70 bores?

I left the original 850 MC (0.75") when I fitted 7-1/2" discs.
With the 0.7" MC the pedal pressure will be reduced by ~15%.
I don't mind the pedal pressure that I have.
If the MC leaks one day I might replace it with the small bore one.
