Since night driving with the original globes is like candle light, I am considering updating the lighting. It wasn’t so much an issue until I moved into the country where Skippy & friends are hard to see !!! Is it as simple as a globe swap ? Or will fuses etc come into play?

Some good quality H4 conversion lenses and a couple of relays will make a huge difference.

The H4 conversion is a simple bolt on swap, with some decent H4 globes you'll get much more light.

The relays will need a little bit of electrical wiring and then you can use higher wattage globes

I’ve recently swapped to the wipac quadoptic kit. Haven’t had a good chance to use them at night but they look good

Why not fit a an LED light bar for night driving, there is no comparison ,they give a fantastic white light and easy to detach(2 bolts) for the original look

Edit : You will find it hard to go back to normal lights after using one of these

I'm really happy with the quad optics too except one got smashed, I replaced it with a normal H4 and can notice the difference.
Also really happy with these on Spot, bulbs are halogens that fit into the old lights:
I was going to put LEDs in the flood beams but the vintage globes guy advised me not to as the spread and distance wouldn't be as good. Probably differs if the optics are specifically designed for LEDs as with the light bars or LED headlamps.

Funnily enough I had the 4 spotties but took them off as it seemed a little overkill. I was living in a well lit area & never used them. Would just changing to the halogen make a reasonable difference?

Relays and the quad optics I reckon would help yes, it was only because I wanted to be better able to spot roos etc that I wanted the spots.

What modle is your mini? if its a square nose you could fit a LED bar behind the grill.

Wiring the standard sealed beams with relays makes a pretty significant difference, worth a try doing that first. If you convert the headlights to H4s they will need to be rewired anyway.

You shouldn't need to rewire the headlights for an H4 conversion?

Unless you are putting 100W globes in maybe.
My Wipac Quadoptic 55/45w lights work fine with the original wires. I just fitted a New Era relay to avoid voltage drop in the switch wiring.

Plugs for the H4s are the same as sealed beams.

55/45 H4s work fine without relays. Same load as now.
But a relay takes under an hour to fit, gets more V to the lamps and saves your switchgear.
