Post subject:  Distributor identification and checking points

Hey all,
I'm trying to check the points of my distributor and I am having issues. Based off the cap and the clips, I was under the impression that it was a Lucas 45D. However, after following the instructions of a friend to try and get to the breaker points, it seems that either I am not doing it right, or the distributor is missing a large portion of it's circuitry (would certainly explain the lack of spark). I have had a look at multiple diagrams and images of the 45D and I can't find a convincingly similar looking image to what I am seeing.

Here is an albumwith 2 images of the distributor: The first image, I have only removed the cap. Second image, I removed the rotor and moved the plate just below the rotor out of the way to show what is below it.

Do these look right to anyone else? From what I am gathering from diagrams, the condensor and points should all be on the same plate as the rotor, but there's nothing except that small black box (which also didn't move easily so I didn't force it off).

Thanks

The reason you can't see the points is that it has an electronic ignition kit on it.

There should be a part number stamped or cast in the body of the distributor

Heres an example of a 45D with a kit on it

It's a Lucas UK distributor that's been converted to electronic (the black box) so doesn't need traditional points and condensor. Googling the 29Z-V4 printed on the module shows it to be a Pertronix unit. I have a feeling that's a very old model but I'm now to the limit of my knowledge so will need someone else to help from here. :)

The things you learn. I know bare minimum about this car, the old owner didn't have the manuals or anything with him when I bought it. Would there be anything in the distributor I would need to check in regards to the sparking issue or should I assume the distributor isn't an issue for now?

There's an Australian Pertronix site that recommends the Ignitor system for the Mini so that's probably what you have.

They have an extensive trouble-shooting section here - http://www.pertronix.com.au/troubleshooting.html

If it is a Pertronix, it will probably have the Pertronix name on the side of the module nearest the distributor body. I have two Petronix equipped cars so if you want to talk to someone local, PM me.

I'd take DavidE up on this offer , maybe he can show you a standard points dizzy and what they look like and how to adjust them , (quite simple when you are shown) as well as the difference between a points dizzy and an electronic type  .
