Hi All

Santa brought me some door open stays which I thought I would fit in a few minutes. About an hour later I had them on after trimming the bracket on the door side and cleaning out several threads. However when I try to close the door the steel rod fouls the footwell and tries to bend. Have I got something wrong?

Andrew

In 35+ years of mucking about with Mini's, I've never seen such a device. Only ever seen the safety belt material type restraining system. Works well enough..

I have a rusty one from 50+ years ago, they were sold as an accessory. But back then, they did fit and worked. Made here or in UK, I don't remember.

They were a BMC accessory.

See in the photo below the plate on the door is mounted 180 degrees from how yours is fitted. Suggest you try that.

Thanks for the reference pic. I thought these were quite common. It does seem to show the bracket 180 deg out but the position of the holes in my door door makes that impossible. These might have to go to the pool room.

Maybe the UK doors have the holes for the brackets in a different location, allowing the bracket to be at 180 degrees???

I've got them on mine. Unlike the webbing type they hold the door open as well!

I think they might only suit the sliding window doors? As above, mine are installed 180 degrees out from yours. The brackets that are bolted to my doors are old style ones which I found worked better than the new repro ones. I also spent a while bending them so they clear the inner trim when closed.

The page above is from the BMC Australia accessory catalogue so certainly the original ones were designed for locally built cars. It says for Morris 850 and no mention of models with wind-up windows so Timmy201 may be right that they are for sliding window doors.

Can the check strap captive nuts in the door be re-positioned to suit?

We had those things fitted on all 3 Minis we owned when I was growing up. 68, 70 and 78 models and a friend had them too. I thought they were pretty common.

Thanks for all the pics. I did wonder about the door type but mine is an early sliding window which should be the same as UK one. Mine doesn’t have captive nuts on the door side, just holes. But no sign that the holes have been moved. A bit of a mystery then.
