Hi All,

I currently have a head sitting at a reputable company who had been suggested on here and other places as the best.

It's a blank NOS 12G940 head that needs a port, new valves, springs, collets, guides, etc to be fitted and assembled ready to bolt onto my block.

How long have you waited/what is a reasonable time frame for this type of work to be completed by a local machine shop these days ?

I had similar work done to a head this year (porting, chamber work, unleaded seats, valve guides, etc). It wasn't an urgent job but I got it back in about 3-4 months.

You should of included a 24 month option.

A week or find some one else............never say you're not in a rush, you'll never get it back.

Two weeks max, but allow for a month. If not ready by then, tell em to stick it and go somewhere else. There's plenty of quality machine shops around which will gladly do the job.

2 weeks from when they pull it down. Or up to 3 months from when you drop it off to them if its a busy workshop.

18 months for unleaded inserts at a highly-respected (by some) and often-mentioned site here.

That time frame is not on. I wouldn't wait that long. Plenty of good workshops around who would welcome the work and the turnaround would be pretty quick.

I think 18 months is a perfect time frame if i were slowly restoring a car.

If I go very quiet there's a very good chance I broke something.

I think it really depends on what you agreed on with the machine shop.
I need it in two weeks, they agree, then two weeks it is.
I'm in no hurry, then your on the back of the que and every other job will come in front of you until they have "spare time".

I know that now.....

I get mine done locally takes about 2 weeks , but if they are too busy I get it done in Perth which is about 1 week

As always, you are best to sort any issues out with the business directly. Calling or dropping in often gets a better dialogue than emails or texts, so i would suggest that.

The machining work is a day's effort, the ordering for a specialist, a couple of hours tops but the porting is the killer. Use to do remanufacturing and the equipment makes it a walk in the park until you get to porting. These days a 5axis CNC would probably have the porting done in half a day.
