As the title suggests, I would like to know what colour the oil cooler brackets were originally. I’ve paint stripped mine and they appear to be a light grey colour in areas that looks original.

The brackets on my 8/70 S were satin black in 1975 when I bought it. Doubt it had been messed with in that period as the cars were close to basement prices and considered not worth the cost of fixing/repainting anything.

Thanks Bill, I can do that.

The colour I have stripped back to must be the original undercoat I'd say.

"Undercoat"?
I think most of those small brackets etc were bare-metal, just dipped in a lacquer (cellulose?) and hung up to dry.
When you strip them, there is often little snail-trails of rust that has formed under the paint.
If yours were grey it might just be age or exposure to sunlight.

Would anyone have a picture of this bracket as well as picture of it installed please?

Mine seems to be missing off my 7/70 Mk2 S

The short leg bolts to the flattened flange behind the grille and the long leg to the flange along the bottom of the front panel. You should have the holes already there.

I'll see if I can find a pic of it installed.

Edit: Below is how the brackets are used to support the oil cooler. Hopefully that is enough to explain things enough for your purposes?

Bmacpipers build thread showed the original brackets on his Tamarisk green Mk2 S. I will have a look later on today when i get a chance.

Thank you Doug for the archive information and diagram. :)

I just went and had a look and can't seem to see any mounting holes for where these L brackets would fit... :?

Ive just got a section of the top edge of the lower front panel behind the grill which has been flattened for the oil cooler to sit on and then a single bolt on either end of the oil cooler bolted through this flattened section... :?

I will get a pic of it shortly.

@ Brad, that would be great as I've been searching for a pic showing these brackets clearly in there original position but haven't had the best luck to date.. :(

There are two brackets - one supporting each end of the oil cooler. Mine are elsewhere at the moment so I can't include them in these photos.

The front hole of the oil cooler base and the front hole in the L bracket are bolted through the flat section of the front panel near the angled grille brace. A second bolt secures the rear hole of the oil cooler base to the L bracket.

At the bottom the L bracket is bolted to the flange of the front panel in a hole below the number plate bracket.

All this is repeated on the driver's side of the car.

A few more shots, please note, I have a spacer between the cooler and the front lip, causing a gap at the back. Also, my screws to the oil cooler are not the originals.

The aftermarket kit had different L brackets and they were painted black.

Here is another picture from a set that was for sale a while ago. Looks like they were grey undercoat and a thin black top coat.
