Hey guys,
Got a gearbox problem on my 78 Chubby.
So first I bought a reconditioned motor and box from someone had gearbox problems with 2nd gear would not engage at all so sent the motor back to get another box this time with it hard getting into 1st and 2nd gear. Its really really hard to get into 1st or 2nd with running it or not. Sometimes it will go fairy easy into 1st but most of the time not so lucky. This time sent the whole car and to get it back with not only a a fair size bill but still got the problem. What would be causing for it to be hard to shift into those first 2 gears. All the rest of the gears are great.

Thanks

Many years ago I rebuilt a 4 synchro remote box with a similar 2nd gear problem.
When driving, sometimes it engaged perfectly and other times it wouldn't engage at all no matter what I did.
I had it apart, IIRC, twice before I found the problem.
I eventually found the problem was due to a poorly machined main shaft.
The main shaft splines for the 1st/2nd synchronizer hub assembly had been machined off centre.
The splines had been cut about 0.010-0.015" off centre.
This caused the synchro hub assembly to wobble and prevented the baulk ring/hub assembly from engaging with the 2nd gear.
It was an Italian made shaft but I can't remember if it was a genuine shaft or an aftermarket shaft.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that mate.
I ended up getting a refund on the motor.
Now the same motor is up for sale again on eBay.
Feel sorry for the person who purchases it

Hope they fixed the problem and not just give it a quick "makeover"

It seems to me it's not a makeover it needs, but rather a strip and overhaul.

It sat on the bench, and the bench didn't collapse :|
