Q. Do I legally need the metal brake covers fitted for rego/blue slip? I have had to change the brakes and there's no covers, I don't care about it but I don't know if anyone will say anything about it at rego time.

Not a requirement.
I dont have them on my car and most people who have changed or rebuilt brakes have ditched the covers too.

I’ve left mine off as well, but I’ve often wondered what was the main original intended purpose.

Probably to keep snow slush and salt off the rotors in UK and Europe.
