Post subject:  Upper contol arm rubbers

Hi.. put new upper control arm kits (shaft bearings and rubber seals) in my 850 today and having a problem getting the rubber seal to sit in place. There is very litlle shoulder on the arm to keep the seal in place. The seal will not stay in against the shoulder and pushes out over the body of the arm. Is this normal or what can I do? I would appreciate any comments on this.

I think I remember mine doing that too, I got them the best I could then didn't concern myself too much after that, they'll be right I reckon.

I also had the issue and decided to just keep it pumped full of grease and ignore it.
If the car is a show car it could be an issue of neatness but otherwise just (unfortunately) accept it IMO.

Same same, did best I could, kept it greased, moved on.

The rubber also looked like it was in the early stages of perishing.

Its a while since I've been there but maybe you should check that you have both the spacers/washers that fit each end between the arm and the subframe. From memory the rubber seal is about as thick as the washer + the indent in the arm....

Mind you maybe quality (dimension) control is not as good in the seal market as the OEM stuff..

Cheers, Ian

After speaking to a local mini mechanic he seems to think is is the quality and sizing of the rubber seals as he has seen the same issues. Some seem wider and thicker rubber. What makes it worse one of the arms has very little rebate for approx half way round where the seal sits and this is the only one that I am really having an issue with. It just annoys me knowing it is not right maybe I am just to fussy.

It's hard to get good rubber goods now, and most is allergic to oil and grease.
What you get when stuff comes from the far East via UK.

Ditto all of the above. Some fit well, some don't; some perish before the car is on the road.....
Keep trying suppliers until something works. There are some that work well but I doubt even the importers know when they have a good batch.
