Post subject:  Mk2 S Block casting/stamping

I couldn't remember if i had posted this before or not.... Apologies if i have.

This is a picture of a Mk2 S thick flange block showing the block casting.

I have read in my many hours of searching the web and books that
the Mk2 S engine blocks have the casting: 'AEG-312' and read also that they can have "AEG-634" with the number part being stamped in some cases instead of casted...

This example seems to show that, but its the last number that has got me curious as its an upside down " 5 " which may be to denote the number " 4 ". :?:

Could this stamping also be due to the casting not coming out correctly after the casting process, in which they grind it down and then stamp the number in :?:

Im interested to hear everyones thoughts on this and wether anyone has seen this before :?:

Regards, Mark

AEG312 was used for the 9FSAY and early 9FXEY. Later 9FXEY and the 1200, 1205 picked up the extra casting number AEG634 underneath the AEG312.

I have photos of the 2 different casting numbers and the change appears to be after 9FXEY 545xx and before 1200 10xx.

Not sure what is going on with your engine. I will do some poking around and see what i can find.

I doubt that the changes made to yours were because of bad casting process. Every AEG312 casting i have seen is very good.

There is mention of an AEG635 stamped into the casting web of an AEG312 on this forum but no explanation as to why. http://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/to ... ave-i-got/

Maybe a rare hopkirk racing factory bathurst special.

Thanks Brad,

Much appreciated and very interesting find on the other forum but a shame it ended with no explanation... Im sure someone out there must know.

Its just something that is really intriguing and would really love to know more on it.

The later changes to the casting number seem to work with my engine number...

Although i like the idea of it being a rare hopkirk racing factory bathurst special.....

Bellow is a link to minispares which mentions the AEG 312 & AEG 634 block "stamping" thick deck:
