Since changing the battery 18 months ago I am now getting deposits on the battery terminals. Nothing else has chnged and it is a different brand of battery.
I know, technically, what causes the deposits but I am wondering why it has now started when it has not happened for 6 or so years until changing the battery..
Anyone got any ides?

What brand of battery? Thinking about the ones I have and the two Repco ones I have both get sulfation, one of them really bad. The other hasn't been used much (not in a car any more) but I charge it every few weeks and I do remember noticing sulfation on it.

Maybe some of the more expensive ones might be made by Century but the standard ones are just "Supplied by Century" and made in another country.

If I had realised this before I bought the Repco battery I would have bought the actual Century which was on sale for only like $10 more at Supercheap.

I have though heard that Century batteries aren't that great, at least the deep cycle ones. Also they are likely only actually assembled here.

Next time I need a battery I will try and get a Panasonic, mainly because I like to try buy stuff which isn't just made in the cheapest place to manufacture. They are also meant to be good and are the OEM battery for many vehicles.

You do put petroleum jelly on the battery terminals before you connect the battery cable clamps don't you?

Yep, sure do. I am tempted to try silicone heatsink grease but it is basically doing the same thing.
I actually cannot remember whether I applied more vaseline with the new battery. However the deposits were on the clamps though, not the posts.

I understand that Century manufactures in Brisbane. I had a friend who worked their years ago. Just looked at their website https://www.centurybatteries.com.au/about-us

Dielectric grease (heat sink or silicone grease as you mentioned) is better for electrics from my understanding. Apparently Vaseline will affect rubber/plastics, has a low melting point and burns pretty well.

I know you mentioned nothing else changed, however is it possible there is too much charge going back to the battery ?

I actually went with vaseline again to see what happens. I have plenty of dielectric grease here but will see what gives first.
The general concensus is deposits on the neg means undercharge and on the pos, overcharge so as it was on both terminals does that mean its just confused.
Voltage normally sits around 14v so that should be good.
I will see what happens.

that is caused by a leaking terminal (fumes) I learned never to pound or force the terminals into the battery.

Or by the natural fumes from the breathers, so,e of which are located adjacent to the terminals.
