Did these ever have a hardened side or a bearing surface on them as the new one I have appears to be anything but special.

From memory they only fit one way due to hole centre spacing. I could be wrong though!

Bleed hole is at 10 o'clock approx. ie on LH side of plate when fitted.

Ring gaps on 10 thou Rod side clearance 10 thou Crank endfloat 7 to 8 thou Its a 73mm bore with 84mm stroke .
Ready for young aspiring boxer to come around to punch me and help put pistons in

Rang all the usual places today and came up with no original quality items in Oz that ive found.One report only of a failure due to this .Many reports it will be OK as they are dissimilar metals.Research found a WA place can analyse the white metal and do a proper repair .
I would rather have worn white metal than worn steel plate .I will leave it there Im not an engineer but ive seen this in my trade and i can call it crap there.
Minispares UK describe the item as per proper spec .The white metal one out of my scrap 998 has quite a bit of wear but could be repaired to original spec
Might be time to use an Oz based company to produce what we want rather than getting dealt lesser stuff.
In my trade 9 years ago we were sold parts with proper part number and no visible defects .Under load they self destructed This was in electronic repair .They were counterfeit parts and a big part of the demise of the industry. Would like to hear an engineers perspective on this like GR and how they are dealing with this .

I have boxes full of new and very good used small engine parts from an ex Mini engine builder/engineer. I personally have no idea what some of the bits are but if you can please put up a photo of the item you are discussing or perhaps a parts diagram, I am happy to have a search to see if I can help with an original/genuine item. Old school engine reconditioners can restore white metallic parts, once upon a time all mains and rods were white metalled then bored.

Below is the part in question (illustration 17). The original UK part number was 2A84, superceded by an Australian part number AYG10 when it was made locally, now part AHU2379.

Why hasn't this been an issue so far in engines built using the part available? What is used in race engines?

The BMC Australia engineering drawing for AYG10 makes reference to a Babbit face, which appears to be the bearing surface Ian_B mentions.

Babbitt is another name for white metal.
I used it at the railways to restore grooved detroit diesel crank pulleys where the seal runs. It's like using solder only harder. Used with gas torch.

Since our name was mentioned in this post we have emailed our supplier tonight requesting an inspection of their stock.

They normally reply overnight.

We have had no issues with this part and supply them to nearly all Australian Mini specialists.

Originally (many years ago) the plate was coated on both sides.
But now they only coat one side now.

Will post answer asap.
