Post subject:  Clutch advice?

Hey people. The clutch in the 1275 just went and I'm hoping for some trouble shooting advice.

I was at the lights and pushed the clutch in and the pedal felt suddenly hard and the clutch would not disengage. I had to turn the car off, put it in gear and start it in gear to take off.

I had a feeling it wasn't fluid related but there was a Supercheap nearby so bought stuff and bled the clutch hydraulics. No change. It doesn't feel like a fluid issue so no surprises.

For the first half of the pedal press it feels like a normal well bled feel and the slave cylinder activates as expected. But then all of a sudden, about half way through the travel, there's a hard stop and it'll go no further. It feels like the clutch itself will not allow it to be activated further.

What do you reckon has happened? Internal clutch issue? Busted thrust bearing?

And if so, is the clutch able to be worked on while the engine is in the car? I've never tried that.

Do you have the external nuts on the outside of the flywheel housing installed and adjusted correctly? Mine came loose and caused the same symptoms as above.

I just wrote a reply and now it has disappeared.
I was going to suggest checking the slave cylinder - the pushrod should move approx 20mm out from rest to disengage clutch. If not, the piston in the slave cylinder might be hitting the circlip due to incorrect adjustment as timmy201 suggested, giving that hard stop.
The clutch and flywheel can be removed with engine in. Jack up clutch end to get access to screws around cover "wok" and watch that fan doesn't hit radiator if jacked too far (or remove radiator for extra room).

Fellas I think you might be on to something. I think that is exactly what happened. I've had the Mini dropped off at home with a free NRMA tow and I'm not at the car now.

Thanks very much guys, very clever. I'll test the theory out tonight and update as to whether that solved it :)

Pull the clutch arm out and see if the ball on the end that goes into the bearing carrier has broken off
this happen to me , New clutch arm and adjust the over throw nuts and all fixed

I'm with Timmy, the outer nut has come off and the inner nut has screwed itself in

And here it is easily pushing the lever in by handImage

except your first pic "resting state" shows the clutch disengaged (pedal pressed and slave piston extended) and your second pic "pushed in by hand" shows it engaged (pedal released and slave piston retracted)

Take the arm out, cross your fingers it's broken, otherwise you're gonna have to take the wok off, and cross your fingers the thrust bearing has shat itself

Yeah, except look at it another way...the first pic shows that even in its resting state the clutch rod was almost entirely extended. So it only took a small pedal push before the slave piston hit the circlip. The second pic shows that in the resting state if the end nuts were tightened, the clutch could throw it out the full extent of the piston travel, thereby disengaging the clutch fully.

...I hope I'm right lol ...

(Btw I do know what you're saying, I'm just hoping you're wrong lol)

true, true.... pull back the slave cylinder's rubber boot, you may get a river of brake fluid

I don't like the 'remove the circlip' approach, I like the 'install a spreader' approach much better

Current supplied slave cylinders have no circlip or groove. :)

Okay now just as you're considering my point of view, I'm swinging around to yours. Ergh. I'll looks at it better tomorrow. I'm thinking you're probably right.
