Hi guys. I managed to find a 20 litre drum full of this fluid. Does anybody know much about it or used it. Is it good, bad, or the ducks nuts....Image

Yes. That is good. I have been using it for a long time. I would suspect it is commonly sold and used in Australia. I bought from the factory at the address on the tin. The owner told me his father worked for H.C. Sleigh who originally made it for BMC Aust. and this was as close as possible to the original formula.

Well that is good news. Thankyou.

Specially formulated? Wow, must really hard to make a batch of 50/50 IPA (isopropyl alcohol) and water! Pretty sure its IPA, I'm a petroleum chemist and used it loads of times, has a distinctive smell. Can probably buy 20L drums of the stuff really cheap, it's a bog standard industrial solvent...

Edit: I stand corrected. The stuff is apparently 49% alcohol, 49% water, the remainder being a "lubricant" and corrosion inhibitor.

Some information about various versions of hydrolastic fluid on sale. Tony Cripps is a member of the BMC-Leyland Heritage Group.

He left out MKO as a local supplier - https://minikingdomonline.com.au/produc ... l-formula/

Here's a few threads about hydro fluid. In the first one I posted some of the BMC documentation mentioned by Tony Cripps.

They use alcohol as it forms an azeotrope with water and prevents corrosion. :P

I have used ethylene glycol/deionised water 50:50. Commonly used in USA.

That'd do it Doc I reckon. The corrosion inhibitor in the coolant will do the trick...
Out of curiosity, what volume of the stuff is required?
Note: If you really got stuck you could just use water as a temporary solution. It's a fluid therefore non compressible, probably change the suspension characteristics somewhat however?

I think Simon K uses straight glycol concentrate as it's a bit thicker and damps better.
I reckon a litre each side, mix 4L up and you will have half it left after pump up, let down fast, and pump up again.

Is that all? Only a couple of litres?!
I wonder how viscosity sensitive the system is? Seems not much, there'd be a fair difference in viscosity between an alcohol/ water brew and straight ethylene glycol I imagine. (could try and look it up, surely there is a viscosity spec somewhere). I imagine the key to whatever you use is having a corrosion inhibitor...
