It all sounds pretty positive for the stuff I have. Id be interested to here about the viscosity differences and changes it could have on the system.

For what it's worth, I don't think there would be an enormous difference in the viscosity of 50/50 alcohol/ water versus straight water. But it would be significantly different to that of ethylene glycol I would think. If only I still had access to a lab.... :-(

You can get a bit of an idea of the difference in viscosity by putting an equal amount of each fluid in a couple of
the same size plastic bottles.
Cut the bottoms off, put the same size a small hole in each cap,
turn upside down fill one bottle with 50/50 alcohol/water
fill the other bottle with the same amount of glycol turn upside down and note how long it takes to drain each bottle

Clever John, better still, use the same bottle and hole for both tests....

Tony - Thanks for posting those additional references. Some great information there for hydro sprung car owners.

Had a quick look at the above links, thanks 850!

For those who wish to make their own brew, Ethyl alcohol or Ethanol and "Methylated" Spirits is the basically the same thing except it has some additives so you can't drink it!
$3.43 per L at Bunnings...
So if you made a brew of say 50% Methylated Spirits, 45% distilled water and 5% Ethylene Glycol coolant concentrate (to give you the corrosion inhibitors and it would make it a lovely green!), I can't see a problem. Especially given the large differences in the formulations quoted in the articles above, the hydrolastic suspension system performance doesn't seem to be too sensitive as to what fluid is used...
(Benzotriazole is a corrosion inhibitor)
Apparently only a few litres is required, so a brew could be made for under $10 me thinks...
My 10 cents worth..
Cheers
Michael

Is that estimate of under $10 referring to 'per litre'?

No Bill, for a few litres plus. e.g. 1 L of alcohol $3.43, 900mL distilled water, price don't know, must be cheap as, 100mL Coolant concentrate, price don't know. So 2 L for way under $10 I imagine....

Why use all these formulae, when you can buy the real thing for about $36 for 6 litres.

I agree, but I do understand some people getting real enjoyment from the research and then going to the effort of making their own brew. A bit like baking your own bread when you can easily wander into Bakers Delight and buy a loaf already made. It's not really about the economics :D

P.S. I'll be buying mine already mixed.

Thank you eightfifty for your for your comments and the links provided to the Austin technical articles. I have downloaded all the articles on building a Churchill style pump. Question is are any drawings available for the components ?
I have all the facilities to construct the pump. It will make a rewarding project and a break from constant work on Minis

Pretty close to the money i'd say Deluxe 67 , i don't think i paid any more than $20 total when i done my car about 6-7 yrs ago and still have about half of it left , i use a 70/30 mix of Castrol Inhibitor and demineralised water , from memory i didn't use 2 litres .
