Hi All,
Thought I'd share my new battery box/cover I made for the mini. I used a Century 55D23L battery it fits like a glove.

When fitting a new battery in a Mini always buy a positive left battery. It is so much safer having the terminals "away" from the tank.

Agreed. But the positive wouldn’t reach hence the cover, nothing can touch the terminals now.

I test fit the same battery 55D23L out of my Mazda. The plastic case of the battery would hit the tank well before the terminals

looks nice, and will definitely stop anything from falling across the terminals, and give you a handy place to put stuff. I'd even think about attaching a little box to the top of it for essentials

however, you have the clamp at the front, is there one at the back? will it work as a hold-down clamp? IE if the car is on it's roof, will the battery stay put?

a proper hold-down clamp is a roadworthy item for that reason - the battery is still live if it's hanging from the boot floor

Depends on how hard you get hit in the rear quarter..............................

That's why I went for a +ive on the left battery. I just didn't feel comfortable with how close the +ive terminal was to the RH tank. In my case there was enough slack in the cable to reach the LH side +ive type battery with no problem...

I agree that having the terminals on the opposite side of battery would of course be better, but when I test fit the same battery as the first post (which is nice and big and has plenty of CCA) I thought it would be a decent option if the terminals won't reach over to the other side.

With my standard battery the first thing to hit the tank is the terminals. With the larger one it is a bit taller, so the first thing to hit would be the plastic side of the battery. I use insulated battery terminals and have a cover over the battery too (and are still using the small one).

Maybe you could squeeze one of these in if you want it to be even better protected

That's a monster battery you have! Mine is a large capacity job that just fits the battery box but doesn't stick up much above the recess. No idea what model/ brand it is, brought it Indonesia. At the time I just chose the biggest with the highest CCA that would fit in.. I do remember its cost was the equivalent of $65 which I thought a bit exy considering it was Indo...
Wonder why I had enough slack to reach LH +ive (looks like the original cable) but you didn't?

As mentioned, I only test fit mine as it was left over from my Mazda. There are certainly better options if you're buying a new one.

I can happily recommend the Delkor 85BR60K 560 CCA Calcium battery (dimensions: 229x172x184mm, just fits in), the only snag is you have to drive your car to Indonesia to buy one..!
