Got my engine block back from the machinist and this had apparently come out of it.
I'm not sure what it is or where it came from-does anyone know?

gearbox to engine locating pin - the fat end goes in the block, the skinny end goes in the gearbox

or could be for the transfer case to locate the same way

They probably took it out to mount the block flat for machining.

Photo before block off to the machinist, I took out the what was left of the dowel. Block had been sitting upright buried in red soil for a significant period before I bought it. Molasses bath will work wonders.
