Hi everyone,
I have put together a website called http://www.whatismymini.com.au

It aims to make it easier to decipher an engine number and/or body number.

I have used what I have found online and in the books I have to build up the data.

It is in its early stages but it would be good if you could provide me with some feedback.

Thanks

Looks like a handy tool. I just tried a few body prefixes.

022X2S2M09. Under "models that have this body number" it only lists the Sunshine. It probably should have (Mini S 3/77 to 3/78) and (Mini Sunshine 9/77 to 12/77)

Also there is no model information for YG2S7 Clubman, 022D2S3M09 Mini SS, YJBAV1R and YJBAV4R Vans.

XNFAB18Y comes up as a 1275 LS under the model information. Should be 998 LS.

No listing at all for YA2S5 Mk2 Matic.

YMA2S4 is listed as both Mk1 and Mk2 Matics. Should only be Mk1 Matic.

YCG2S2 is not listed. It was the Mk1 Cooper S exported to NZ as an Austin.

Well done. Looks good.

Does it support models produced outside of Australia?

Does it support more than one engine number per model? The Mark 1 S had some 9FXEY power plants late in production, Mark 2 had some 9FSAY early in production, and Clubman GT had 9FXEY early.

A minor point but the word MINI in upper case is typically used for the BMW MINI. You might consider Mini instead.

Some Mini engine and body numbers quoted in registration and other paperwork get alpha and numeric characters confused, resulting in no match. A statement about this near the search input box might assist.

I've just looked up a Morris 850 and noticed a few errors too:

Your site:
Y = Australia
M = Morris
A = Austin
2S = 2 Door Saloon
1 = Mk I Riley Elf, Wolseley Hornet, and Austin/Morris Moke

Real code is:
Y = Australian assembly
M = Morris
A = engine size 800 - 999 cc
2S = two-door saloon
1 = 1st series of model

The Morris 850 was also available with an 8Y prefix engine (the 8Y engine was also used in the Mini Van and Mini Minor). More info on 850 here:
viewtopic.php?f=54&t=95881

I'd suggest you also put in a note to tell people not to put in the slash / when entering the engine number (or accept both ways of entering the number)

I've also seen a couple of different plates when it comes to 850 engine vans. Watto also has the A as indicating 1/4 Ton rather than the engine type.
http://www.bmcexperience.com.au/issue-21/mini-van

I've got photos of ID plates that say:
YJBAV1R 850 VAN - 8Y
YJBAV2R MINI VAN - 8Y

From what I can tell all 850 vans were fitted with 8Y prefix engines, although I haven't done much research into the vans.

I started off using the list of Minis from other sites so not everything is listed.... but I will add them.

I will update the site tonight.

Have you used John Sneddon's book as a reference?

Clubman GT had 1200, 1205, 1206 and 1207 prefixed engines.

Would be worthwhile including a contact link (email address) so people can easily pass on updates, comments and suggestions.

Errors exist in many of the lists already produced and published so be careful not to replicate those.

>> 022X2S2M09. Under "models that have this body number" it only lists the Sunshine.

For any additional models I require the body number, engine number, engine capacity, and model name

body number, engine number, engine capacity, Mini S 3/77 to 3/78
body number, engine number, engine capacity, Mini Sunshine 9/77 to 12/77
>> YG2S7, 1001, 1098, Morris Mini Clubman,

I have updated this. Vic Mini had it as YG2S6

Did the YG2S7 have an engine prefix of 1002, 1003 and 1004?
If not, what did?

022D2S3M09, 99H791P, 998, Leyland Mini SS
022D2S3M09, 99H702V, 998, Leyland Mini SS
YJBAV1R, 8YUH, 848, Morris 850 Van
YJBAV4R, 10YJUH, 1098, Morris Mini Van (Mini K Van)

>> YCG2S2, engine number, engine capacity, Mk1 Cooper S exported to NZ as an Austin
What engine number - capacity?

>> XNFAB18Y comes up as a 1275 LS under the model information. Should be 998 LS.
I will fix it.

>> No listing at all for YA2S5 Mk2 Matic.
>> YMA2S4 is listed as both Mk1 and Mk2 Matics. Should only be Mk1 Matic.

I have fixed that - this information came from the Vic Mini website

Thanks.

The YCG2S2 was 1275cc. Same car as the Morris Mk1 Cooper S except for the external bagdes. Horn logo. Rocker cover decals and the ID plate.

Not sure what engine prefix was used in the YG2S7 other than it was an 1100 and not sure what engine was in the Leyland Mini S from 3/77 to 3/78. Maybe its in Johns Book.

Those lists getting around on the mini club websites are crap.

Thanks,

Another to recheck is YJBAB12R Export Moke doesn't have a model listed.

Post subject:  Re: New website whatismymini.com.au

I have just gone through and added 154 entries. I just have section 6.4 of the Australian Mini and Moke book left to go through.

I cannot find the engine number for these (from the book)

AKPPB19Y 998 Leyland Moke Pick-up Oct 1979 to May 1982
AKFPB19Y 998 Leyland Moke Oct 1979 to May 1982
AKFPD19Y 998 Leyland Moke Californian Oct 1979 to May 1982

AKPPB19Y 1275 Leyland Moke Pick-up Oct 1979 to May 1982
AKFPB19Y 1275 Leyland Moke Oct 1979 to May 1982
AKFPD19Y 1275 Leyland Moke Californian Oct 1979 to May 1982

I also have a number of questions for John about certain bits in the book.

I will need to rejig my regular expressions so that it will pick up some of the new models. I will also need to update the prefix descriptions. That can be tomorrows task (todays task).

>> but it's all been done before. Try looking at http://www.leylandaustralia.com.au

I did not know about your website, even though I have been searching for something like it. Obviously my search terms weren't working.

I still think that my site does provide value to the community. My searching is a bit different to the leylandaustralia site, which I think will make it easier for users find body and engine basic information - which is its intent. I lay out my results differently too - which I think is effective. My site focuses on searching for body and engine numbers. I don't intend to have anything more than that.

There are many sites on the Internet that are about the same subject so I am not concerned 'it's all been done before'.

>> If you are going to extract the data from John Sneddon's book, I would suggest you ask John first.
>> I am sure John is a very nice man, but he may not prefer to have large parts of his work put out in the public domain.

Most of the information that I am putting out is from existing websites and from Ausmini. I have used Johns book in the last night or 2 to QA the data as well as to fill in some blanks.

I had plans to email John anyway as I would like to add a link to his book and provide him with my feedback. My site only provides people with about 0.1% of what Johns book provides. I have no intention of putting large parts of his book in the public domain.

>> As for John's book, I wouldn't put too much reliance on the identification information just yet.
>> He's just been given something like 14 pages of corrections, and I would expect another edition will be forthcoming as soon as he can manage it.

Well like everything, something is better than nothing.

My site is not intended to be the bible of Mini identification or anything, it is just another resource people can use to find information. I am planning on having a contact form where people can contact me. I can then feed that back into the community.

Thank you for your feedback.

Just tried that Leylandaustralia decoder and tried this ADR plate. The decoder says its a Sunshine however the Sunshine was not made until 6 months after this.

Then I tried this one and it came back with no matches.

They do list a Mini SS but have it as 022X2S3M09

Looks like they need to do an update as well.
