Quick question chaps - I'm looking to buy a decent spot weld remover drill bit. I'd prefer to buy one good one than go through a bunch of cheapies.

Also, is the 8mm one the way to go you reckon...what do you use?

I've seen various style s too, some look like claws, some like flattened normal drill bits. Some with spikes pointing out. What style do you guys know that work best?

Thanks!

While you are waiting for responses I suggest you do a forum search on spot weld drill or similar words. You will find there are a lot of questions and answers that should help you make a choice as this has been discussed many times in the past.

Centre punch the centre of the spot weld ,drill through both panels with a 3mm drill bit, then use a 6.5mm or 8mm on the top panel wriggle the drill a bit on the top panel .I then use a screwdriver and hammer, and large pinchers or vise grips to break the weld. Has worked for me for years. You get a feel for it. I have lost count on how many panels I have removed. You can use a spot weld drill if you want. I used to grind a new drill nearly flat with a slight cutting angle, they are called sheet metal drills. Slow speed for the drill required and do not overheat the drill bit. Drill out all the welds before removing the panel.

I have used a paint scrapers in place of your screwdriver nice and thin flexible little panel damage and a half decent one can take a beating

This is a good call on what can be a bugger of a job.My late friend used to air hacksaw halfway thru the scrap panel and twist the pieces off with pliers or vice grips.Ive done it and it works.

don't forget to use weld through primer when replacing a weld on panel, spray edges of panels. Comes in pressure can copper based or zinc based the paint will get dragged into the weld as the weld cools. Available at body repair suppliers.

Best way is to drill through the spot welds but only the part that is to be removed with a spot weld drill ,being careful not drill into the panel you wish to remain, then use an air chisel to separate the panels, works a treat , thats how the pros do it :D

So long as one panel is being trashed an alternative is to use a wide grinding disk on the angle grinder (the cheap ones seem to be wider and have a nice square edge, grind away the whole weld. Did this many times and the results are fantastic, some times the spot remains at full thickness and the grind clears the upper panel surrounds. It's so much easier then drilling so long as you have access (again easy to make access through a junk panel). All others I use an 8mm 135 degree ground drill bit and sharpen often.
