Hey Dudes,
Quick question, am about to take the shell off for sandblasting but had a question about the underside of the car. Does the bitumen coating need to come off before it goes to get sandblasted?
Do they normally do the underside of the car?
If it does need to come off before I take it to get sandblasted what is the best method to get the coating off?
Cheers,
Brendon

Sometimes the media will just bounce off the coating. Might pay to ask the blaster what his experiences are.

The old original stuff usually becomes brittle and will come off if it has been redone with newer stuff in its life the grit may bounce as mentioned above

They will blast anywhere you want on the car. It is better to remove the proofcote first unless yours is flaking off. The medium will bounce off unless you get under the proofcote .Use Butane and a metal scraper. Then undercoat the body with 2 pack epoxy primer, the floors are always damaged use a brickies bolster dolly and hammer. You can get them better than new with a days work. Also use a straight edge. Repaint floor with stone guard.

Thanks Allen. I’ve just got the rear subframe off. Front subframe next then I’ll get it on its side and strip the underside of the car. Great advice. This is suck a journey!

Out of curiosity, what are you paying for the sand blasting?
Are you getting the entire car done? What media are they using?

Cheers

Steve

Hey Steve,
I’ve done a fair bit of research on media and price. I originally wanted to get it dipped but have changed my mind to sandblasting... for now anyway.
Prices, $800 for shell only with 2 pac epoxy primer. Dipping was lots more expensive.
I’m still not definite on which way I’ll go.

Don't dip a mini body. Blast only $800. excellent price including 2pack epoxy primer. You guys should know why you don't dip a unitized body.

Yep $800 is a good price for what you think they'll do. I've had 2 shells blasted by the same business, the first had my paint under the 2pak primer. The second I delivered the car and asked for pictures prior to painting, well that upset them as "pictures would slow them down and so cost extra", I agreed to be there to inspect the job in stead!, well the body was extra well blasted. I doubt I'll get as cheap a price again.

I'd also throw in any other parts you conceivably need stripped, you'll appreciate it on the flip side.

the racers stack dry ice on the floor for a while to make it brittle then give it a whack with a rubber mallet to get it off.
