Post subject:  How to Get Quotes for Work on Bodyshell

I have a bare Cooper body shell sitting on a trolley ready for some small welding jobs and painting. When I decide on a panel shop to do the work I’ll hire a trailer and transport the shell there.

In the meantime how do I obtain quotes for this work from several panel shops without having to actually take the shell round to them all on a trailer?

Do I simply take photos of the shell and show them to the shops? Or ask the shop owner to drop round a see the shell at my place? How have others gotten quotes for cars that can’t actually be driven to the bodyshops?

Don't know too many panelbeaters that would be keen on quoting based on photos.

I have used both home visits and traillering the shell to them in the past. I think that is the only way you'll move forward with any certainty.

If a panel beater wants the work they'll organise for somone employed there to drop by for a visit.
Ive done it that way before.

Insurance Company's demand that repairers work this way now if they want to get jobs with their ordering system and to get paid...so a lot of them would have no trouble with photographs...

However, they will almost certainly say that the quote is ballpark or even padded because they haven't seen the shell in the flesh (so to speak)

You can go three quotes or get quoted on an hourly rate...BEWARE the slicks who say we have the lowest hourly rate around (say $70/Hr) as they can just be trying to get you in the door and on the hook and immediately give your job their LOWEST priority...

Word of mouth recommendation is probably a good thing...but

There are no guaranty's and you could find yourself stressing unnecessarily over something you have little control over!!

I could go on...but I need to go lie down to get my blood pressure under control

LOL thanks for these insights. Every other time I've wanted this type of work done I've been able to drive the car needing work around to the various panel beater shops for quotes. I don't particularly want to have to hire a trailer and cart the shell around to three or four shops only to be told they're not interested or too busy with insurance work or quote some sky high prices.

I'm not expecting it will be a totally painless process, or cheap, but I'm in no rush to get it completed, after all it's been sitting down the back corner of the shed for the past 35 years.

It would be great if you can find a retired panel beater who knows his stuff and likes a bit of cash. Ask around...

Yes it would be good indeed. Anyone used Airtasker.com for this type of work?

Getting a body restored at a smash repair shop means MIG welding and plastic filler. This is because the boss wants it done PRONTO. Check out a resto shop. Being a cooper it may be worth spending some $$$$.I spent a lot of time on my CS body .I fit new panels, instead of patch work .Heritage panels.
