Hey everyone, As I'm sure many of you have experienced, our cousins in the UK have a far easier time than we do when it comes to sourcing quality shells/project cars for their Mini builds. My question is - how easy (or even possible) is it to purchase from overseas and import a Mini shell (specifically a pre-80s panel van) for the purposes of restoration? This is assuming that it comes with minimal running gear (just subframes/wheels to roll). Would this be considered as a "vehicle" or "vehicle parts"? Has anyone done this themselves or heard of others doing this? If so, what sort of hurdles were jumped when you went to register the build? Any advice would be very much appreciated! Cheers, Hugh

I would personally think the opposite. Most project cars in the UK are rusted out and need many panels to be replaced before they are useable. If you were able to buy a shell from the UK and bring it in as "parts only" it'd probably need to be cut in half to prevent you from rebirthing the car with a different ID. I don't know how you'd go bringing in a rolling shell unless you had it in a shipping container Any cars that are brought into Australia from overseas need to be complied to meet Australian guidelines. I'd agree with Timmy here, they envy our old rust free shells. any car in the UK will be mega rusty compared to anything here in Aus. hell they are even replacing most panels on late rovers now.

some of the stuff the pom's rebuild are nothing but crusty piles of tin. Also, looking at a few 'rebuilding' pictures, the workmanship looks a bit ordinary.
