Post subject:  Value of a fully recon 65/66 Cooper S engine incl gearbox

Hi,

I've recently had a price for reconditioning my gearbox to bring it back to its original condition (no more). I have yet to receive the cost of the recondition of the engine block. I am trying to determine whether the cost of each when combined with the cost of the initial engine will exceed the final value of the complete unit. In other words, should I not finish my project, I at least want to get my money back. What is the going cost of an early 66 unit (pre 4000 engine number and Q 22G333 cased gearbox (rubber unis)? I would appreciate if anyone has values of the gearbox and block as separate units.

Cheers

You should keep the original engine if its still usable. Make sure they don't machine off the engine number if decking the block.

If you find a bare block with caps it could cost you up to $1000 and legally you can't restamp it to match your ID plate. I reckon you would have a hard time to get a block even within a few hundred numbers from your original one. A non matching car is worth a lot less than a matching numbers.

The cost to have someone do all the work will be the killer. That's why so many people give it a go themselves or just get the machining and specialist bits done my the workshop.

If the car is otherwise "drivable"...and money is a big problem...then hunt around for a second-hand, functional, gearbox (and engine)...put your originals aside until you have the funds to do it properly

Only a rough guess , if it were me i'd expect to pay around $1500 for a gearbox reco and somewhere around $4-5 grand for the engine if you are paying someone to do all the work , IE: stripping , cleaning , supplying parts and rebuilding .

There are a lot of variables attached to quoting an engine rebuild , but whatever you do don't try and shortcut the job to save money , it'll only end in tears . By getting it done properly you should have trouble free motoring for a long time.

Im getting my 1100 rebuilt at the moment in melb was quoted by a bunch of places at around 4-5 just base rebuild price. I wanted to upgrade some bits so its going to cost me about 5-6.

Thanks everybody. I'll definitely be continuing with the project but stretching it out slightly to spread the cost. Engine and gear box first and then bodywork etc. The wife's holiday may have to fit in there somewhere as well!

"The wife's holiday" is critical to the long-term strategy!
Also helps to point out, casual like, the value of recent car sales prices.

What condition is the body in ? Bodywork can easily outstrip the price of mechanicals.

That’s for sure. I’m not under any illusion that the project will cost me 10s of thousands but it’s just how many. As far as the body work is concerned, I’m a novice at this (even then, maybe I’m over exaggerating my ability) so my opinion is pretty worthless. Nevertheless, i’ll provide it anyway. I’d say very good with the exception of the sills (rust) and maybe front panel (no rust but took a few dings in its past). I have been advised by a bodywork guy to use 10K as a figure but he’s seen photos only.
