A 43D. Has centrifugal advance but no vac advance.

Or a simpler one like this as long as the advance curve is suitable

Either a 23D or 45D will work. Just get one with a top entry cap to look right on a MK2 or GT.
Don't stress getting the original S advance curve, it doesn't work great with premium unleaded fuels. You lose torque.
Ideally you want a curve with 9-10deg centrifugal advance plate, advance all in by 3500 ENGINE rpm or 1750 DIZZY rpm. Set total advance to around 30deg BTDC @ 3500 up.

If the cap is a good condition genuine LUCAS branded one I'd probably use that.

I use an old Lucas one on my 25D and it's much better quality than the reproduction ones you can buy now.

Which is the correct distributor position?

I have had a look through a heap of pics and the majority have the clips at 1 o'clock and 7 o'clock and the wires exit the top of the dissy under the top clip.

Doesn't really matter as long as the coil wire reaches, the clips can pop off and the HT leads are the correct way around.

The Vac Advance 29D4 dizzys have the vac unit facing up or at 1 o'clock and the coil lead exiting the top under the top clip.

I usually make sure the low tension black wire faces the coil so i’d set it about 180 degrees from where you have it now

What position should the points be at 12 O'clock?

They should only go in one way. Opposite side to the condensor.

It doesn't matter how you mount it as long as it works. But I wouldn't have the coil wire exiting the opposite side to the coil.

Typically the points are on the top (roughly 12 o’clock position)

Yep. It does help with access to adjusting them if they are at the top.
