Bill - I don't suppose you have a photo of the stamping, or could get one? I thought my muffler was original but can't see an obvious part number stamp.

You basically have two choices... Buy an RC40 ..which was specially designed for the Mini, or have your exhaust guy build one to fit.

I have an RC40 but ripped the centre box open on debris on the road. The local specialist looked in his stock and chose a suitably sized HotDog to slot in place.

I'm surprised your guy wants you to specify box sizes.. IMHO you pay him to choose something suitable and bend and weld pipe to fit it....

I have a spare RC40 in the shed that I bought a few years ago to replace the one I bought about 30 years ago. But its still hanging there because the old one refuses to die..

Cheers, Ian

Does the rc40 come with the hangers and brackets so you can use the original brackets on the under side of the mini

If you look at winabbey's parts book detail, the muffler and engine pipe (the pipe from the end of the exhaust extractor to the muffler inlet) are held in position just with the use of 1 7/8 inch pipe clamps. You keep the original rubber-mounted hangers that attach to the subframe, front and rear of the muffler, then hold the the muffler/pipe to them with a pipe clamp at both ends.

Ok thanks that makes sense

I bought an RC40 twin box, they also sell an RC40FK - RC40 Fitting Kit with all the right hangers
E.g.

No cutting or welding required

Muffler is 450mm long, this Lukey was on my 1970 Mark 2 S when I bought it in 1978. May be original, 904 is stamped on input/engine end as Bill B said.

Thought this would be a good place to post some extracts from a couple of Lukey Muffler publications for Mini models. They confirm that 904 was the Lukey part for the Cooper S muffler, and C-904 for the tailpipe.

The earlier dated catalogue shows pretty pictures of the exhaust, while the later one shows the BMC/Leyland equivalent part number.

Thought i would add this visual component to this discussion.

I was lucky enough the other week to pick up a NOS Lukey 904 muffler.

Ive taken a few pictures showing the unit, manufacture embossed name, as well as the 904 stamping.

If anybody would like any exact measurements or details please let me know.

Well done on that acquisition. They don't come up in that condition very often. I put in the initial bid but didn't bid further because of what I'm about to say.

Immediately after bidding I noted another Cooper S muffler for sale on eBay with a buy it now price. The item was described as a genuine original Australian factory Cooper S muffler with very little use. It still had the BMC part number HYL4220 written on it. After buying it I discovered the seller was Graeme Urch, proprieter of City Leyland here in Melbourne back in the 1970's and 80's and long term custodian of the magnificent BMC Works Cooper S LRX828E. City Leyland provided spare parts and vehicle servicing and for many years worked hand-in-hand with the Mini World car sales business located next door. Graeme took the muffler from his stock and fitted it to LRX828E to enable road registration while waiting for the correct exhaust system to arrive from the UK. So my "new" muffler has BMC Works heritage, or more accurately has had a "brief encounter" with a genuine Works car. 8)

I've yet to take delivery but the following pics were with the eBay advert.

mini210 - Suggest we get together to compare the two mufflers to see the differences. It's possible Lukey made the mufflers for BMC, in which case the only difference would be the Lukey name embossed on yours which would probably make it an aftermarket item.

This pic of Graeme next to his famous rally car was taken at the recent VMCI Mini Show.

Doug,

It doesn't get any better than that! :D

You must have some sort of super eBay search powers as i tried every search possible to see what others were listed at the time but to no avail.

A very good find Doug with amazing historical history. 8)

We will definitely organise a catch up very soon and compare the two mufflers.

I have noticed that yours has a longer input pipe with bend into the muffler as compared to the shorter straight input that mine has.

Im very interested in comparing the two. :D

Regards
