Post subject:  Converting suspension from cones to coilovers/shocks

Hi Guys
I'm currently in the process of upgrading the suspension and engine on my 1999 Rover Mini Cooper.

I want to upgrade from the standard cone suspension to shocks or coilovers
Just wondering what are my options?

Thanks
Dan

Well I'm sure I wont be the only one here with this but here goes. Unless your intending to track race the car, fitting coil springs is a down grade resulting in a harsh ride and less control. Oh and they seem to break with some regularity.

It's pretty hard to beat the factory cones and shock setup. A new set of rubber cones and a good quality set of shocks will give a really good ride, and will be height adjustable with a set of Hi-Los. The rubber cones will degrade over time and a new set of cones will make a huge difference over old ones.

Rubber cones:

Or the hard "Red Spot" cones

Hi-Los:

The next option they sell is the drop in coil springs, which replace the cones. I've never tried a set, but I have heard mixed reviews (like them snapping).

The last option is the coil over kits. They bolt onto the shock mounts, which means that you're supporting the entire weight of the car on the shock mounts. This can mean you get failures of the pins on the suspension arms as well as the body mounts.

Only upgrade you need on a '99 mini is some good adjustable shocks and making sure all the bushes/ bearings are in good condition.

If your car is a Jap spec SPI then coil overs could result in having to change / alter the radiator overflow tank and the air con fan shroud.
