Is 2mm enough clearance between the oil cooler and the starter motor ?

with a solid mounted power unit it is but with rubber mounts that will degrade soon after fitting no.

Place it in gear and rock it back and forth to check the clearance. My oil cooler has about a 5mm gap between the starter motor and about a 2mm between the grill.

No that is not enough Gap. You need one of my Bosch Planetary geared starters. They are more Slimline. Besides much more powerful.

I wouldnt use a gemini one on a cooper s but i bought one today for 50 bucks Original non China.
My Cooper S has Lucas original and oil cooler and it all fits
Is Bosch still who they once were or are they just a name now?
