Post subject:  Mini K speedo and BMC steering wheel

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone out there has a picture or can advise the correct speedo for a early 70's Mini K? I have seen one with a mph and kilometres speedo and was wondering what was original.

Also after a BMC 2 spoke steering wheel. If someone has one out there to sell pm me

Thanks

Thanks I did think that was the case

Tell me Bill B given your mini k is original I would love a photo of the binacle in order to check the temp and oil gauges.

Photo of of the inside would be handy

Thanks

Mini K has a grey faced 90mph speedo with a white needle.

It seems the temp and oil gauges have no “made in UK” hence mini K

Smiths had a factory in Australia. The dark grey faced speedos that also don't say "Made in UK" and the matching fuel gauges were made in Australia.

As others have said, the instruments for the Mini series were made by Smiths in Australia from mid-1968. They can be identified by the Comet Grey face colour and BMC Australia part number stamped on the rear (AYA9165 for the non-Cooper S models).

See below for the speedometer engineering drawing. The oil pressure and water temperature drawings are of a similar format and level of detail.

They had a factory in Ferndell Street Granville South. I lived near there and in the '70s had my speedo recalibrated by one of their technicians, who made it accurate at 45mph but a bit out everywhere else against a master clock. He also asked if I wanted the odometer left as was or returned to zero. He was happy for me to watch him test the oil pressure gauge using weights on a hydraulic plate. The gauge was very accurate.

Just to throw a spanner in the works, my '70 Mini K had a 140 km/h speedo. It's now in my Deluxe. It says "Made in the UK" on the dial. I'm confused because Google says metric speedo's weren't introduced until 1974 so how come my "K" had a metric one? (It reads the correct speed and my g/box has a "K" final drive). Odd...

Assuming your not the original owner I would say that a PO has put a moke speedo in it.

I read somewhere that after the minis stopped using the centre speedo they went back to UK made kph speedos for the mokes.

That would explain it, had forgotten about Mokes.
