Anyone know the best place to buy carpet ?seems minisport has good carpet molded with underlay. I would like to buy carpet that is close to the original mk 2 CS type Thanks Allen

This what I have been advised by my club boss from Brisvagis. Purchase 'loop pile black classic' ( you will need 4M.) from Knox Auto Carpet in Melbourne and have Lee Bros in Albion, Brisbane to make them up. They have done a few mini's. I have. Mk2 S like yours.

Over the last 6 months I've been working with All Car Carpets in Montrose, VIC to produce a set of carpets for the MK II Cooper S to original specification. The target market is those doing a sympathetic restoration of a MK II S who are prepared to pay a premium for carpet that is as close as possible to the original - warts and all. The owner of the company, David Clark, and his family are BMC enthusiasts so there is an incentive for him to get the final product right.

David has been provided with the BMC Australia engineering drawings for all the pieces of the carpet, underlay and the construction method, plus details of the correct rubber heel mat, wheel arch pad, rear floor protection strips and rivets, and press studs. I have lent David a set of original MK II S carpets for reference.

We have had some discussion about the holes for the remote change gearshift, floor dip-switch and seat anchor bars on the rear floor (for 1971 models) and whether they should be cut out or simply marked on the back of the carpet for the customer to do. I've suggested they get confirmation on what's required at the time of ordering as some owners have removed the floor dip-switch, for example, and so don't want a hole in the toe-board piece.

I'm waiting for the first sample set so I can check it on my own car. Until then I can't personally endorse the product but I'm hopeful of a good outcome.

If someone is trying to make a quality copy of the original, then that's a step in the right direction. I hope they use a better quality carpet than the original although that shouldn't be too hard. Mk2 loop pile unravelled very quickly once the thin backing material broke up.

The challenge is to balance originality with availability of improved materials. My personal aim is to have the equivalent of NOS carpet and underlay. If a genuine NOS set popped-up I'd certainly be interested in acquiring it for my own car as I'm trying hard to keep it authentic without being ridiculous. Next option is to use carpet, binding, thread and rubber items that are close to original.

Bill - I know what you are saying about the relatively poor quality of the original carpet but I'd be happy with original, even if it were to last for only a few decades.

The original carpet didn't fit perfectly, unlike modern moulded carpets, but that's what you will get if the original patterns are used. That's why I said "warts and all" in the post above.

Its also similar to a gt too but they don't have a dipper switch as mentioned customer should be specific if they need the hole or not

What year did the Mini lose the floor dip switch? It was pre 1971, my '71 K had the switch on the indicator stalk.

I tailored my own about a decade ago from the Claasic Loop Pile carpet from Knox.

If anyone is wondering, it holds together very well It seems the backing material is quite good these days.

So is the Clubman Gt carpet almost the same as the late Mk2 S? Guessing dip switch hole would not be required for the Gt, any other differences?

A quick question about the photos from Mick.
There is a rubber toe pad on the wheel arch. Is it the same as the Mk1 minis?
I seem to have lost mine over the years.

The MK2 S toe pad is a finer pattern.
