Repositioned aluminium med rockers for offset exhaust valves.
Do I use aluminium shims or stainless.
I need two more but I chose aluminium Rob suggests stainless and he is a fitter of sorts lol
Ive dremelled little grooves to move the oil feeds inspired by GRs crankshaft and main bearing stuff.
The end two moved outward I need a thin shim and split pin or redrill a hole in a hard shaft.
My mate has tungsten drills

Surely aluminium would compress too easily to be a good shim material...?

as far as compressibility goes, there's no real difference... if you could contain water in the area under the rocker pedestal and not have it leak out, it'd be just as compressible as steel - that said, my rocker shims are steel... or am I talking about the wrong shims again? my rocker arm spacers are aluminium, and the shims between the rocker arms and the pedestals are steel

if you really want a scare, I'm about to put a set of these in the back of my Polo - camber and toe adjustment shims - a PLASTIC SHIM with varying thickness that goes BETWEEN the stub axle and the rear suspension beam, it's 2 pieces and one rotates inside the other, line up the marks you want for the adjustment you want and bolt the stub axle back on. The 3 bolts and 1 hole you see in this picture are what mounts the stub axle, which has the wheel bearing, brake caliper mount, everything...

Hmm.. I seem to remember a discussion about 4 metric yonks ago, about aluminium rocker _posts_ deforming under compression. Maybe I'm getting my wires crossed too.

yeah, the aluminium posts deformed, but they're a bit different to a shim that's under compression all the way across

Wouldnt strictly have to be aluminium or stainless- normal steel should have a decent life within an oily rocker cover.

As for shims- if it was me I'd go to a bearing shop and buy a proper ground thickness shim- one thats preferably hardened.

Graham Russell and Minis Plus both sell rocker post shims laser cut from ground stock. 2 thicknesses. I used some when putting MED 1.5 rockers on a MK 1 S head.

Rethinking my post from last night..
The MED rocker shaft is 17mm, not a common diameter but a 16mm flat washer would go close to fitting. I have used bored out flat steel washers to offset smallbore exhaust rockers to a 1275. Worked OK. The whole assembly is well oiled.
