Post subject:  Dating mini mayfair from VIN / Build number

Hello all
Hoping to be more active here soon. Investigating some minis to get me on the road.

One is an import which is listed as a 1989 Mayfair
This is a bummer as 1 year older and the 30+ year old car rules make it much easier and more affordable.

However I was wondering if there’s any way it could be 1988

The VIN is SAXXL2S1S21416721
I’ve used various vin decoders and it leaves me with a LhD Mayfair import
Build number 416721

This puts it in a given range of I think 88-92 but not specific year

Does anyone know possibly how to narrow it down?

Many thanks in advance

It would help if you told us where in the world you were...

Only way to get something verified is to give the body number to British Motor Heritage and for a fee they can issue a build date certificate.
I have one for my rover, it was built in 87 and is 80,000 cars built before the one you were looking at.
Production of cars in 87 and 88 was around 75-80,000 cars so the 1989 build seems fairly likely.

Just wait 8 months and it'll be cheaper!

Ah you're very kind, thank you. That's extremely helpful.
I recall talking to a guy about his rover once.
He said one bit of paperwork said 86. One said 87, Another said 85. So he just went in the middle...

30 years seems to be the cut off.
Duty is now 10% not 5% :(
And GST remains at 10%

The asbestos stuff has come up, but I'm not sure how many cars actually get targeted and pulled apart / what era they think is the most likely culprit for gaskets and brakes.

Nothing to my knowledge has changed. Still a cap on cars to 88 and not an age thing that floats.

Given that minis have big stickers under the bonnet advising they have asbestos components in them - I'd say you could be in for a problem.

According to my records from Rover the first Mini built in 1989 had VIN ending in 412900.

All Minis built up to the end of 1996 had asbestos.

AQIS are aware of this and it has caused delays and additional costs with several cars that I am aware of. There are other well publicised cases of cars needing thousands of dollars of rectification to satisfy AQIS requirements.
